Am I looking at the wiring diagram correctly in seeing 12v for the hazards and turn signals goes though the turn signal flasher? 12v -> Hazard switch -> flasher -> steering column switch?

Rewiring Red from scratch has led to some curious discoveries.

Dave,

I think you probably are looking at it correctly. I participated in a turn signal diagnostic project years ago and remember the circuit being entirely cryptic.

Dave, I haven't looked at 510 wiring in a long time, but it seems logical that would be the case. You need a timing circuit of some flavor to interrupt the power to lights to make them flash.

Thanks!  I am in the final stages of getting this thing back on the road after paint. I drove it to 5/10 day but the only lights I had were brake lights, lol.

Looking to take it to JCCS this year to show the CA guys that non-SR 510’s exist

I long ago chassed out a non-op left turn signal failure a 72 wagon...the failure was inside the hazard switch (I raided a tiny screw fron a sony walkman and used it to reinstall the contact inside the hazard switch, period correct repair).  The circuits are indeed "conjoined".

And wagon hazard switches are different than sedan. And I think the taillight wiring makes its way thru that switch, too. No access to my poster-sized wagon diagram right now.

More than once I have had someone (usually young kid) ask me “SR20?”. The disappointment on their face when I say “nah, VG30” is pretty funny. More than once they were visibly disappointed. LOL

No sure how this ties into wiring, but:

Well, the old adage "old car farts like big old car parts" follows the lineage of "no replacement for displacement".  Likely equates to mature persons with bigger engines breath more.  Turbos expand on that...

How's the project going?  Street-able drive timeline?

The project is coming along!  I actually drove 3 miles to Mark Clegg’s 5/10 day event, so Kelvin has seen it in the metal. The exterior is mostly complete, but the interior is maybe 5% done. No gauges, no lights other than brake lights, no carpet, no mirrors.

The car has numerous changes other than paint, and I mostly blame Mark Clegg because every idiotic idea I came up with he was “oh? Ok!”. From rivet-on fender flares that I wanted converted to weld-on (not a fan of the rivet look), to dual-mode exhaust (the best functional change IMO) to vertical trunk-mounted spare tire, he said OK to everything. I count 25 changes to the car that don’t include paint.  Biggest cosmetic change is rear exhaust

Mechanically it’s good to go, and I do drive it in a 1-2mi loop around my neighborhood every couple of days – partly to get used to it again, but I cannot overstate the number of changes this car has, including a from-scratch engine wiring harness, from scratch heater/defrost assembly and a ton of electrical that all now uses relays (starter, headlights, etc).

Having said that, I work on it nearly every night I suspect by July 1 It’ll be fully in service, so it’s really, really close!

What is the tilt of the L-16, L-18, L-20B engines (I estimate about 12-degrees for the L-18)?

Are they all the same?

They are all the same but I never thought of a reason to measure the angle.

I figured they were all the same but not confirmed.  A Google AI search suggest the angle is 12-degrees from vertical per a service bulletin reference.  Seems about right.

Reasons could be working with alternate transmissions and/or designing carb based intake manifolds (carbs like to be level).  Another would be curiosity.

What is the SR20 tilt, if any?

You want to use the 510 mounts [and oil pan and pickup] with any L series motor. The angle does not change. The blocks mount the same. Using pickup mounts cause trouble, but it is likely from the body side not the engine block side.
Transmissions were pretty much the same from roadsters to Z cars as far as mounting  at the engine. FJ, R, and U engines shared these things. Small A and V motors are different. Fuel injectors don't care about angles so new stuff may be different. FWD tends to put the starters in from the back, so SRs have transmission mount troubles, the RWD ones need Japanese transmissions.

I'm pretty sure RWD SR20 is straight up, no tilt. At least that is how Super Mario set mine up.

And I think the KA motors are too.

I would expect that any engine with a cross-flow head design would have an essentially vertical alignment for cylinders.

Why do some later model Datsun trannies have an outward (away from driver) tilt  when bolted to the L16  or L18 engines?.

The Z series engines, like Z20, Z22 used in the 200sx have a different tilt. so those transmisssions are tilted to match and get the shifter in the right alignment
