Subaru R160 clutch type LSD fluid

I just installed on in my Bluebird.

I’m looking for advice on fluid.

The internet is information overload.

Standard gear oil plus modifier or synthetic gear oil plus modifier or full LSD specific gear oil or ???

 

From DQ 4.2  “Make sure your differential fluid is topped off (use 1.6 quarts of new high-performance fluid made for LSDs) before you drive.”

 

With all the viscous LSD’s out now, I’m curious if “high-performance fluid made for LSDs” is the same for both viscous and clutch type.

I have always used Redline 75W-90 GL5  gear oil with a half bottle of GM LSD friction modifier in my Datsun Comp R160 clutch-type LSD. Viscous LSD’s are totally different beasts, and operate on totally  different principles vs. clutch type. If you have a clutch type LSD, ignore anything viscous. They are not the same thing.

Carter, I have a Subie clutch pak in a Datsun R160, with 4:37 gears, that Malcolm Garrett set up ions ago for me. I ran Red Line Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil (It’s Synthetic rated at 75W140), with the same modifier.  I also used a Perrin Performance oversized finned cover.  While my car has sat for over a decade now, it never failed me during my racing years.  I mainly ran Hallett Speedway, Heartland Park, and Mid America motorplex.  The gears were great for the 2 shorter tracks and a week bit short on the long straight at Heartland. I have a 3.73 that I was setting up for there when I started my 2.5 Trans Am conversion that is still not done…

Redline seems to market Shockproof for racing, and those who bang gears, power shift, etc.  I figured that's not me and I'm not racing, so I decided to stick with the regular stuff.

I just remembered that lately I've been running Redline 75w110 in my AP Suretrac R160 LSD  for a little more heat protection than 75w90 without going to 140 viscosity. When I get my clutch LSD back together, I plan on using the 75w110 in that as well.

Thanks for everyone’s input.

I ended up using Ryal Purple Synthetic 75/140

It has “frication modifiers” built in and is advertised for clutch type LSDs.

It must have some magic built in as well at $25/qt.

Filled it up and took a test drive last night and backed that up with a work commute this morning and everything is nice and smooth and quiet and OH man, the 3.7 ratio vs the 4.3 (or whatever the N510 cars had) is SO much nicer on the freeway.  And I hardly notice the acceleration difference.  Just makes everything smoother.  My driving enjoyment level in this car just went up one full click.
