I've built and tested my new spare tire access rod.  It's a cool upgrade but not a useful performance thing.  Just easier to use and something to be proud of.

As discussed earlier, I used a readily available 0.5-inch OD steel pipe(tube), a 7/32" drill bit, and a stock Datsun lug nut with a #12 steel machine strew as pin. The version I build is not welded, but believe that would be the way to go.  I used a SS anchor tapping screw at each end with shallow notch at center of each pin as anchoring method.  If welded, these and the #12 screw not needed and be much stronger.  Some manner of end plug to be added to seal steel tube.

A comparison photo of the stock and alternative parts provided.  The middle rod (version-2) shows the super easy alternative to just use the stock rod and pound it into a stock lug nut.  It works fine as well and eliminates the need for the handle/driver.

Lastly, the cool new rod (version-3) is only 24" long and fits perfectly in the stock holder without extending through the seat brace (cross member?).

Have any wagon owners here done the spare tire access rod mod I proposed?

It's likely that you may not carry a spare tire, but if you do, it's quick way to drop 2.5-lbs, have less gear to carry, and be easier to use.

My data is in this Datsun510.com folder (album):
