The Northern Hemisphere has seen significant wildfire activity since the beginning of May this year, with widespread record-breaking fires in Canada and large fires across eastern Russia. Wildfire activity follows seasonal patterns, with the Northern Hemisphere typically seeing fires from May to October, with peaks in July and August, coinciding with the hottest and driest months of the year. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS*) monitors the locations and intensity of fires, as well as tracking emissions and forecasting the impacts of the resulting smoke on the atmosphere.
During May, CAMS FRP data showed daily total intensity to be well above average for the month in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. High daily total values were also observed for the Northwest Territories, and further east in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, particularly at the end of the month.
Eastern provinces have also been impacted by unprecedented wildfire activity. Widescale fires across Nova Scotia during May and June led to tens of thousands of people being forced to leave their homes, while the resulting smoke triggered air quality alerts for New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Ontario saw a significant increase in wildfire activity during the same period.
On 25 June, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre declared that the 2023 wildfire season had seen the largest burned area in Canada's recorded history. By the end of July, over 120,000 km2 had been burned; nearly twice as much as the previous record of 71,060 km2 burned during the entire of 1995.
As of early August, large scale wildfires continue across provinces and territories in the west of the country, including within the Arctic Circle, with the national total estimated carbon emissions continuing to increase well above any previous annual total in the CAMS GFASv1.2 dataset.
While the fires across Canada have been record breaking, fire activity in Russia has been high, but not as widespread as in the summers of 2019, 2020 and 2021, when large-scale fires, especially in the Sakha Republic, were burning throughout the summer.
For 2023, CAMS data show daily total cumulative carbon emissions for Russia as a whole to be below average during the spring and also further east throughout the summer, despite an increase in emissions through July.
