Geocaching GIS Day Booth
Wednesday, November 16th from 10:00am - 3:30pm, IU Wells Library (corner of 10th St & Jordan Ave)
November 16th is International GIS Day, which is a day to celebrate the many uses of GPS technologies. Indiana University will celebrate the 12th annual GIS Day on Wednesday with a variety of informational booths and activities showcasing the work that IU, local businesses and government agencies are doing with Geographic Information Systems.  The event will include an exhibit of satellite images of famous world locations.

Stop by at the Wells Library (corner of 10th St & Jordan Ave) any time between 10am and 3:30pm to learn about geocaching, meet some geocachers from our two local groups (Bloomington Geocachers and the Geocaching Club at IU), hear about upcoming geocaching events and get some hints on the GIS Day Geocaching Challenge! While there, you will have the opportunity to see a few displays about other GPS and GIS technologies that are being used by members of the Bloomington community, departments at IU, local businesses, and state & local government agencies. It will give you the opportunity to learn about other ways you could use your GPS unit besides geocaching. Check out the GIS Day at IU website to learn more about the many exciting activities and displays going on for GIS Day.

PLUS it counts as an event cache: http://coord.info/GC35VFV Stop by at any point during the day!

Get Oriented Geocaching Event
Saturday, November 19th, 10am at the Fire Tower at Lake Monroe (near the Sycamore Loop Trail)
MonsterCatAmbush is hosting this event. He'll be doing a crash course on navigating with compasses and a chart/topographic maps, which is often called Orienteering.
Before setting out, he'll do a brief course on:
  • how to read a compass,
  • how to orient ourselves using a topographic map,
  • how to avoid walking off a cliff using the map's elevation markings,
  • how the compass “rose” (printed on the map) works,
  • how to shoot a course,
  • how to triangulate using geographic features,
  • how to find north using the sun and a wrist watch,
  • how to use a sewing needle, a leaf, a rock and a cup of water to improvise a working compass,
and a few other things that could help keep your next trip into the woods from leaving you lost in the wilderness.

You'll also get to see various features including old homestead ponds, the Terrell Cemetery, the very cool remains of the Axsom hunting lodge, and a view of the lake and forest from the historic Hickory Ridge Fire Tower!

MonsterCat will be providing compasses and charts for everyone! Make sure to bring water, hiking shoes/boots, and probably some warm clothes!
Sounds like a fun and really helpful event! (Use our Facebook group to plan a ride share if you'd like to share a ride to the lake!)

Santa Cache Needs Cookies! A Holiday Cookie Mob
Sunday, December 11, 2pm Downtown Courthouse Square
Due to the popular demand of last year's cookie exchange, we're back with our second annual holiday cookie exchange flashmob. Come armed with yummy cookies and leave with some more yummy cookies!
If you can, post what kind of cookie you're bringing in your RSVP, so we don't get too many batches of the same type of cookie.

Captain V's Pub Quiz
Saturday, January 14th, the upstairs room at the Irish Lion at 6pm.
The event will be a pub quiz with 5 rounds of questions and 10 questions per round. The categories are: Science, Geography, History, Geocaching and Literature & Arts. You can play alone or in a team of up to 3 people. The winner or winning team will receive a prize with lots of geocaching goodies.
The quiz itself will start around 7.30 pm which allows enough time for those interested to order some food beforehand. Please note that people UNDER 21 ARE WELCOME TOO! You don’t have to be 21 for entering the upstairs room.
Please log a "will attend" on the event page at least a few days in advance if you are planning to come so that we can let the personnel of the Irish Lion know and make their life easier.
This is Captain V's first time hosting an event. Thanks Captain for planning a fun new event for us!

Facebook Group
A few people asked me to setup a Facebook group, so that people could meet, share and discuss geocaching stuff on Facebook. Our Facebook Page that we've had going has been great for announcements, but not informal discussions. Use it to ask for hints on caches you can't find or see if anyone's interested in going geocaching sometime with you. It is intended to be more social than what we have here on our e-mail list. So here it is: http://www.facebook.com/groups/133110390112003/ Feel free to join if you're interested.

Hope to see you at an upcoming event! Let me know if you have any questions!
