I'm proposing that we setup an automatic link up to the indiana DSTAR reflector after a certain amount of idle disconnect.
The base reasoning for this is that we have had a lot of good activity on the system while connected, and while disconnecting for other uses is not a problem, the system is not getting reconnected when people are done with their own use.
I propose that we set up the system to connect to REF024B after something like 20 minutes of idle activity while disconnected.
Here are a couple of things to note:
- call sign routing will still work while connected to the reflector
- traffic can still be confined to the local repeater and avoid the gateway while conncted to the reflector by leaving out K9IU G from RPT2. So, you could have 2 memory settings for instance, one that goes out to the reflector, and one that does not. Now, other users on the system would not know which you are using at the time so it may take a little "good operating" procedures to avoid confusion
- users are still allowed to disconnect from the reflector and connect elsewhere. What I am proposing is that the repeater then "fixes itself" when the user leaves it in a disconnected state.
Thoughts?

It also adds periodic status messages over the data display. It can
do voice as well but one of the things I personally like about dstar
is the lack of constant repeater IDs. So the voice messeges are turned
off.
Let me know if you notice any problems with its behavior.

FWIW, when connected to a reflector you can always use the repeater in
"local mode" by taking 'K9IU G' out of RPT2.

I got an email today from a dv dongle user about the reflector being
disconnected with no other transmissions after that, a behavior I've
noticed a lot recently as well. I'm happy with people disconnecting
it, in fact if you want a guaranteed QSO day or night there are a
couple of commands to try after unlinking (see below). But, for the
sake of the local users across the state who like to chat with us down
here I'd like to link us back up to REF024B once it goes idle.
(some random reflector commands - put these in the UR portion and set
RPT1 to "K9IU B" and RPT2 to "K9IU G")
"K9IU LX" Link to last busy reflector, great for finding a QSO in
the quiet hours
"K9IU RX" Random reflector link to one of 10 most recently busy reflectors
"K9IU IX" Will return the current link status (and show the
currently linked reflector on your display)
and, of course, "K9IU U" will unlink the currently linked system
I'd like to hear thoughts on this.. I thought it was just a personal
wish (and personally I link it up in the morning before listening in
all day) but after the email I got I thought I would revisit the
auto-linking.

Yeah, I can see situations where the reflector might be too much
traffic (like if we were connected to REF001C.. last time I tried
that a guy was literally putting on a 1 hr broadcast show over d-star
and his ustream channel!?). And let's hope that some day statewide
traffic would reach such heights, but for now I see it more along the
lines of the W9WIN system and the amount of traffic there is on there.
I listen in through the day and it is definitely peaking higher during
commute hours, but occasionally people will ID during the day while
driving to and fro. As long as I am not in a meeting, (which is far
too often), I try to say hi. Its a nice break from the day. :)

I should also add that being linked in to a reflector (especially this
reflector) does not preclude local traffic. Any traffic is good
traffic if we are making use of the airwaves. Half of the
conversations we learn from are someone else's local traffic.
