Good morning all,

I finally got my shack put back together so I'm back on the air at home.

I would like to talk to a ham in California on D-Star. He used to live
in Bloomington and moved there several years ago. I don't have a clue
how to set up my 880 to connect to him.

Any chance someone would be available on the repeater this evening to
walk me through the process?

Thanks!

Kevin

Hi Kevin

I can probably help you with that. How much have you played with your
radio? There seems to be at least 3 different ways to configure it to
work D-Star repeaters.

There is DR mode
You can just use memories, I can't remember the other way.

I use DR mode, so if you want to try that method I can send you my
config which should get you pretty close.

Thanks AJ. I have a .icf file from Cory that I used to program the
880. It works on the K9IU node with that configuration (at least it
did a few months ago when I last used it). That was after the
frequency change, so I should be set with that.

What I need help with is how to connect/link to user KB6JST on the
W6DHS system. We can go off-list if needed.

KB6JST that call seems familure....

Well the trick here is that if you are using Corey's config, you need
to make a memory that contains the K9IU B freq, RPT1 = K9IU G and
RPT2 = KB6JST

That should route you to the last D-Star repeater his call sign showed
up on. We can work on it tonight.

Its ok to keep this on list so that others who might have the same
question can see later....

Yes, he used to be a K9IU member I think. I know him from when I was a
Civil Air Patrol cadet long ago. He's the one who convinced me to get
my ham ticket back in 1996.

I think I can handle that, thanks.

Cool! I have no idea if he'll be online this evening, but I figure I
can try during commute time. Other people on that repeater and on K9IU
will hear me calling him, right?

Yes, people on K9IU will hear you, and people on the repeater he last
keyed up on will hear you as well.

One final question: do I need to unlink when done with a QSO, and if so, how?

First I relalized I told you the wrong things for your
configuration... where was my brain...

TX freq = K9IU 440 repeater
UR Call = KB6JST
RTP1 = K9IU B
RPT2 = K9IU G

Ok, now that I have that horrible mistake taken care of :)

There is no linking involved when you do callsign routing. Think of
the repeater like a network router, with a bunch of static routes.
The route is there, all you need to do is send a packet that way, and
the route automatically picks it up. When you are done the route
still exists, just nothing hits it.

Jim suggested that I connect to Reflector 14C and listen for a while.
He hangs out there.

How do I do that? Do I need to unlink the current reflector first?

Kevin, to do that set the UR call to REF014CL that will link us to
that reflector. In general linking to a reflector is done by REFXXXYL
where the XXX = reflector number and the Y = the port.

To unlink just send a U in the last character of the UR call.

I'm at my Radio now if you need help.

Thanks for the help this evening! I was able to link to California,
but I didn't make contact with KB6JST tonight. Will try again some
other time now that my shack is back together and my radio is
programmed correctly.

I unlinked REF013 and re-linked to REF024.
