Yes, if it is password protected and latest pdfcrack says that it is not I would appreciate if you could send me the pdf or upload it somewhere so I can investigate what the cause is.
I have not seen any such pdf before so I have been unable to look into it.

where you have the object number (in this case the encrypt object) in the beginning (right after one of those ^M signs). This would show how the object looks like in your troublesome pdf and hopefully give a good clue about any wrong assumptions being made in the pdfparser of pdfcrack.
Provide me with the trailer(s) and encryption object(s) and I will investigate the problem.

I just installed pdfcrack to try a few modifications of a password that's not
working as it should, but although Evince and Inkscape tell me that the file
is encrypted, pdfcrack tells me "Error: Encryption not detected".
Evince and Inkscape do say "weird encryption info".

As a last test before sending this message, I've tried to install the latest
Acrobat Reader 9.2, and it does open the file when given the correct password.
It seems that whatever encryption scheme it's using, it's not supported by
either of Evince, Inkscape, pdftk, or pdfcrack. I tried to decrypt it with
pdftk and it says "Error: Failed to open PDF file:"

The trials of two other programs say that a file pdfcrack doesn't detect
encryption on uses " Acrobat Standard (Standard) 128-bit security v.4."
Is pdfcrack supposed to be able to work this method?

I'm having the same problem with pdfcrack 0.11 running in Windows 10. Another PDF cracker (Guapdf) says it's a "compressed document with 128-bit RC4 encryption (Acrobat 5 compatible)". It's a 3.8MB PDF.

I virtualized the installation of Adobe Acrobat Pro XI v11.0.11 together with Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 v14.0.7015.1000 x86, carried out on Windows 7 Enterprise v6.1.7601 x64, making use of VMware ThinApp v5.1,

Now, the problems which I am facing are that I am getting file previews in the preview pane inside virtualized windows explorer, for Microsoft Office file formats but not for .pdf files, even the thumbnails are not generating for every .pdf file

My assumption here, if the numbers are different with "pdfcrack --bench", is that the compilers are different and/or the compiler have better optimizations under one platform than the other. This is at least as long as the numbers are not similar (I am not sure what the margin of error here is, you might want to try the --bench a few times to see how much the values fluctuate).

Regarding the performance issue I myself discovered that pdfcrack is much faster in Windows than in Linux. At home I have an intel i805 Dual Core - 2,66Mhz. I compiled the source package with success and I obtained the following results:

As you can see from these results the binary compiled for Windows compute faster then the one from linux.
I would like to mention also that previously I used pdfcrack which came with my linux distro, and that the one which I compiled from source by me it's a bit faster but not faster then the windows counterpart is.

The speed differences are within 15% which I suspect are due to different compile flags and/or different compiler versions.
The platform should not really matter anything noticeable for pdfcrack as it only does number crunching and no disc or platform specific usage.

To make a proper benchmark on two different platforms you need to use the same compiler and compiler flags and then compare the results. As no assembler is used, pdfcrack is very dependant on a good compiler and slight changes in the fast paths can have a huge effect on the performance.

Unfortunately I cannot help you there as I do not have windows and do not distribute the windows binary. It depends possibly more on compiler version than options but some good things to try apart from different compiler could be -Os or -O2 instead of -O3. Other -march and skipping -fno-reorder-functions might also have an impact.
