Tricks of the Game-Programming Gurus is a book written by André LaMothe, John Ratcliff, Mark Seminatore, and Denise Tyler, and published by Sams Publishing in July 1994. It is a 746-page introduction to game programming focused on C- and x86 assembly-language coding for PCs running MS-DOS. It is notable due to its strong focus on Doom as a design reference, being prominently billed as a gateway to creating one's own "Doom-like" games.

The guru knows that he or she does not and cannot know everything about the Internet. Therefore, this books offers a great deal, even to the guru. For example, while I was reading this book, I learned quite a bit about a subject that I knew nothing about, like programming muds. The guru, though, has many tools and an ability to learn that compensates for gaps in knowledge. Related to this, the Internet guru has contacts and/or friendships with other gurus that provide invaluable information.

4. REALITY BITES: June 23, 1994. It's hard to recall a time when setting up a group of strangers in a camera-filled home was a new idea. But the 1992 debut of "The Real World" "invented reality TV," says Thompson. "It's absolutely ground zero." And the inclusion of Pedro Zamora, who was gay and soon to die of AIDS, in the 1994 season did more to promote tolerance than hundreds of public service announcements. "It was probably the most riveting piece of television I had ever seen," says Brian Graden, then a young, gay man and now an MTV programming exec. "I had never seen someone like myself reflected back to me . . . it really changed things for a whole generation of gay people."
