MtoFrance is the official French meteorological administration, also offering services to Andorra. It has the powers of the state and can exercise them in relation to meteorology. Mto-France is in charge of observing, studying, and forcasting weather and monitoring snowpack. The organization also issues weather warnings for the Metropole and the overseas territories. Mto-France is also in charge of recording and predicting the climate.

Mto-France has a particularly strong international presence, and is the French representative at the World Meteorological Organization. The organisation is a leading member of EUMETSAT, responsible for the procurement of Meteosat weather satellites. It is also member of the Institut au service du spatial, de ses applications et technologies. It is also a critical national weather service member of the ECMWF and hosts one of two major centres of the IFS numerical weather prediction model widely used worldwide.

In addition to its operations in metropolitan France, the agency provides forecasts and warnings for the French overseas dpartements and collectivits. It has four sub-divisions based in Martinique (with further divisions serving Guadeloupe and French Guiana), New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Runion. Some of these sub-divisions have particularly important international responsibilities:

Although the original name of the organisation was "Mto-France", with acute accents and normal French capitalisation, all the publications made by Mto-France are now using the name written with capitals only, without any accents, everywhere the name is used as a trademark for the products and services delivered by the national organisation.

This trademark decision reflects the need to have its name not altered in electronic documents due to transcoding errors, and to allow easier international references in many languages, including when referencing the organisation itself (in copyright notices for example, or when citing sources).

The name in capitals or with normal capitalisation with accents is protected internationally under trademark law, and as an organisation name. Some non-binding information documents sometimes forget the hyphen in the name (but the hyphen is normally required).

Mto-France heat alert, part of its vigilance system [fr], was put in place following the 2003 European heat wave. The 2022 heat wave was the earliest in the year since records began and marked the fourth time that a red heat alert had been issued since the protocol was activated after the 2003 heat wave.[2]

Ensemble forecasts explained

One 'ensemble forecast' consists of 101 separate forecasts made by the same computer model, all activated from the same starting time. The starting conditions for each member of the ensemble are slightly different, and physical parameter values used also differ slightly. The differences between these ensemble members tend to grow as the forecasts progress, that is as the forecast lead time increases. The black lines represent the mean of all the ensemble forecasts for a given time, while the shading indicates the spread. See the middle icon at the bottom right for the colour scale.

The summer 2024 issue of the ECMWF Newsletter is now available. As well as news about ECMWF staff and events, it features articles about new developments and the use that can be made of ECMWF products.

Alan Thorpe, former Director-General at ECMWF, and Florian Pappenberger, our current Deputy Director-General and Director of Forecasts and Services, discuss the enormous opportunities and challenging issues for machine learning and weather forecasting.

International collaboration is fundamental to the work of ECMWF, working with the EU and the meteorological community at large, including the World Meteorological Organization, space agencies, and scientists around the world.

The meteo_france integration uses the meteorological data from Mto-France to provide weather forecast for any location in the world with a focus on France. One or more locations can be set via the front end or via the configuration file.

To enable an entity disabled by default, go in Settings -> Devices & Services, click on the city name in Mto-France and then the X entities link. You will have the list of the enabled entities. Here click the filter button and select Show disable entities. The disabled entities will be visible in the list, select the one you want to enable and click the Enable Selected button.

Overnight into Sunday the weather is changing with a mix of clear and cloudy skies and a chance of showers. On Sunday morning rainfall becomes more steady as more clouds move in. For the afternoon there is a chance of thunderstorms and local showers. The sun will not be visible. With 60% probability of precipitation we are at the upper end of a moderate chance. Temperatures as high as 24 C are foreseen. Overnight into Sunday blows a light breeze (7 to 12 km/h). At the break of day expect a moderate breeze (20 to 29 km/h). Sunday afternoon blows a fresh breeze (29 to 40 km/h). Gusts to 70 km/h are possible. Winds blowing overnight from Southeast, in the morning from Southwest and during the afternoon from West. The weather forecast for Warsaw for Sunday can be accurate in parts but deviations are expected. Check again for latest updates.

The location marker is placed on Warsaw. This animation shows the precipitation radar for the selected time range, as well as a 2h forecast. Orange crosses indicate lightning. Data provided by nowcast.de (available in USA, Europe, Australia). Drizzle or light snow fall might be invisible for the radar. Precipitation intensity is colour coded, ranging from turquoise to red.

The real-time satellite image combines visible light during daytime with infrared radiation during nighttime. At night, the image is not dark as infrared radiation can detect temperature differences. Unfortunately, low clouds and fog are difficult to distinguish from ground temperatures and thus can be almost invisible during the night. Meteosat satellite images for Europe are updated in real-time every 5 minutes. GOES-16/GOES-17 (North & South America) and Himawari (Asia) images update every 10 minutes.

Precipitation is estimated from radar and satellites. Precipitation estimates from satellites are less accurate at night than during daytime. 2024 meteoblue, NOAA Satellites GOES-16 and EUMETSAT. Lightning data provided by nowcast.

26th ALADIN General Assembly, 7th joint meeting with HIRLAM Council and ACCORD kick-off AssemblyOn 26 November 2020, was held the last ALADIN General Assembly: besides the usual reports and decisions, the GA was proposed to look back to the last 10 years and warmly thanked Piet for his terrific work as Programme Manager of ALADIN. Piet also received a thank you gift from the teams.

The documents and presentations of these meetings are available here, with the approved minutes (Minutes of 26th ALADIN GA and Minutes of the last joint GA-C and ACCORD kick-off meeting).

The agendas of these meetings were mainly focused on the preparation of the joint ALADIN General Assembly & HIRLAM Council, the signature of the ALH MoU and the first Assembly of the new Consortium. The minutes of these meetings are on-line : the PAC-HAC recommendations have already been implemented by the Convergence WG and the documents amended accordingly to PAC-HAC discussions and distributed to the ALADIN & HIRLAM Directors for their video meeting on 26-27 November 2020.

The ALADIN Directors should have met on 25 of June 2020 in Barcelona for the 25th ALADIN General Assembly and on 26 of June with the HIRLAM Council for the 6th joint meeting of the ALADIN General Assembly and HIRLAM Council. These meetings took place as planned, but on video-conference format. The documents for the single ALH Consortium, as adopted by the 6th joint ALADIN GA and HIRLAM Council, are available below (versions finalized on 1st of July 2020 by the Convergence Working Group according to the GA-C decisions):

The 1st visio ALADIN Wk-HIRLAM ASM was held from 30 March to 3 April 2020.The pdf files of the presentations/posters are on-line and the videos of the sessions have also been added on the meeting web-page (although it would take more than 24 hours to watch them all). You can also consult the exchanges and information written during the chat discussions.
