NoteThis 2023 Global Hunger Index report supersedes all former GHI results. As always, rankings and index scores from this table cannot be accurately compared to rankings and index scores from previous reports. The 2000, 2008, and 2015 scores and indicator data contained within this table and the 2023 report are currently the only data that can be used for valid comparisons of the GHI over time (see Methodology).

The Global Hunger Index is a peer-reviewed annual report, jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe, designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at the global, regional, and country levels. The aim of the GHI is to trigger action to reduce hunger around the world.

Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organisations in Germany, independent of politics and religion. It was established in 1962, as the German section of the "Freedom from Hunger Campaign".

In 2023, the world faces a devastating combination of crises: the long-term effects of the 2020 pandemic, ongoing impacts of climate change, and the knock-on effects of conflict and violence which, even when localized, can hurt millions on a global scale.

While many farms in Liberia have good conditions and soil for growing rich harvests, they often lie fallow due to a limited availability of equipment and supplies. The country is therefore dependent on imported staples, which have risen in cost in recent years due to the pandemic. With approximately 50% of Liberians living below the poverty line, this has created a dire situation.

Niger was excluded from recent Global Hunger Indexes due to insufficient data, but estimated to be somewhere among the top ten hungriest countries in that time. Last year, it re-entered the ten hungriest countries in the world list at number 7, and has moved up in 2023. Unfortunately, the latest developments of a protracted crisis in the country threaten to push more Nigeriens into hunger.

Despite these challenges, community groups have come together for several initiatives and projects to address some of the challenges facing food systems in Niger, supported by the High Commission for Nigeriens Nourishing Nigeriens. Activities include providing nutritionally-fortified flour at affordable prices and consistent quality and identifying areas of action for local policymakers to pursue.

Over the last three decades, however, the weather has become less reliable with failed rains and frequent droughts. This year was an especially poor harvest, bookended by a long hungry season, due to rain-induced flooding in January and February that decimated crops. This not only deprives people of their primary source of food, it also lowers incomes and raises food prices. The World Food Program estimates that rural Basotho spend 45% of their income on food.

In terms of food security, the Democratic Republic of Congo was hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2020 and 2021, the number of people facing hunger jumped by 20%. Historically, Concern and Welthungerhilfe have faced challenges with getting a complete picture of hunger in the DRC. However, in 2021, we were able to once again include it on our GHI rankings. The situation, as we can tell, is dire.

For more than a decade, a widespread humanitarian crisis has gripped the Central African Republic. Bouts of sectarian violence have displaced one out of every four Central Africans and led to rising rates of hunger and malnutrition.

As noted above, there are many countries where hunger is widespread but where data is insufficient to properly rank them on the Global Hunger Index. Learn more about the hunger crisis in South Sudan, as well as how Concern adapted its award-winning CMAM program to address both hunger and the realities of COVID-19 in the country.

Thanks to early warning and early action, drought-plagued Somalia avoided a famine in 2017. However, Somalis have been hit hard by the Horn of Africa Crisis, part of what is best described as a cycle of crisis that has plagued the country for the last four decades. While the summer rainy season has helped matters in Somalia, the situation is far from resolved.

These top-ranking universities exemplify commitment to eliminating hunger through dynamic approaches that encompass both community engagement and global partnerships. By focusing on sustainable agriculture and effective food distribution strategies, they contribute substantially to the eradication of hunger, ensuring that future generations have access to nutritious and sufficient food.

To provide a fair and comprehensive assessment, our methodology for SDG 2: zero hunger includes a wide range of indicators that cover essential aspects of universities' involvement in combating hunger and enhancing food security:

The Impact Rankings are inherently dynamic: they are growing rapidly each year as many more universities seek to demonstrate their commitment to delivering the SDGs by joining our database; and they allow institutions to demonstrate rapid improvement year-on-year, by introducing clear new policies, for example, or by providing clearer and more open evidence of their progress. Therefore, we expect and welcome regular change in the ranked order of institutions (and we discourage year-on-year comparisons) as universities continue to drive this urgent agenda.

Understanding the demographic profile of older adults in Georgia can help us understand the extent of the problem and the opportunities that come with that awareness. The key risk factors for senior hunger include:

The fourth edition of the report, prepared in collaboration between German non-profit Welthungerhilfe and its Irish counterpart Concern Worldwide, is a peer-reviewed publication and was launched in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, on Tuesday.

A mounting balance-of-payment crisis has led to depleted foreign reserves and the country currently owes its creditors more than $77bn, payable in the next three years, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Of the five Hunger Games movies in the franchise, they all rank fairly high among fans, but some are certainly better than others. The original movies brought the world of Panem to life, and they also made Jennifer Lawrence a household name. The Hunger Games book series by author Suzanne Collins has gained an immense fan following since its debut in 2008, and it didn't take long for Lionsgate to acquire the movie rights to the trilogy. But as with all beloved book series, there's often hesitation when it comes to transforming pages to the big screen. The Hunger Games movies ranked show some adaptations were better than others.

The movies followed Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence), the scrappy teen from District 12 who bravely volunteered to take her sister's spot in the Hunger Games. Katniss used her experience to revolt against the Capitol and, in turn, she started an uprising. The franchise has since expanded with the first prequel movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which follows a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) and Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) during the 10th Hunger Games. The Hunger Games movies ranked from worst to best also highlight the success of this franchise even as it grows and evolves.

It's extremely difficult to satisfy everybody when it comes to the final film in a major franchise. Unfortunately, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 showed that all too well. There were a lot of high expectations for director Francis Lawrence to appropriately close out the final chapter of Katniss' story, but there was a sense from many people that this ending felt anticlimactic. The storyline at this point was grim, yet the movie focused too much on action sequences rather than character interactions. There is also a sense that what happens to Panem after The Hunger Games' Second Rebellion would have been a more interesting story.

This isn't to say that Mockingjay - Part 2 was a horrid film. It was still very watchable and did build to a striking climax where Katniss finally got her chance to take down the Capitol. The fierce heroine took down Panem's most dangerous leaders, but she lost a lot along the way; broken relationships, trauma from her experience in multiple Hunger Games, and witnessing the death of Prim took a toll on Katniss. Lawrence sells the grief of the franchise's hero, but Katniss' suffering makes it hard to imagine she could ever have a happy ending.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 marks the point where the franchise turned, becoming an all-out war movie as the Second Rebellion kicks off. Unfortunately, while the performance of Lawrence and the stellar supporting cast ramped up the energy, the film was mainly concerned with moving pieces around the board and lost some of its allure by stepping away from the Hunger Games. By not featuring a Hunger Games for the first time in the franchise, Mockingjay - Part 1 lacked the thrill that made the first two movies so great. Splitting the final Hunger Games book in two also left the feeling that this movie was treading water in saving the big moments for the end.

However, the glimpse inside the rebellion and its various players was an interesting new direction to take the franchise in and helped to explore Panem. It was also refreshing to see some of the core characters have a chance to interact properly once again. Except for brief sequences at the beginning of the first two movies, Katniss barely had time with her family. Mockingjay - Part 1 put Katniss' relationship with her sister and mother at the forefront, which deepened the Everdeen family dynamic ahead of the bigger twists to come. And while Peeta was held captive and brainwashed for most of the movie, Katniss was able to spend valuable time with Gale, something that fans had been wanting since the first movie.
