AlienRage is a 2013 first-person shooter video game for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 (through Xbox Live Arcade), and PlayStation 3 (through PlayStation Network) developed by CI Games, then known as City Interactive, using Unreal Engine 3. The game has single-player and competitive multiplayer modes. In its single player campaign, players are put in control of an elite soldier named Jack which is sent to destroy a mining facility and its aliens after they turned against and killed the humans that they had shared the facility with.
Alien Rage is a first-person shooter, in which players fight through several linear levels, killing a variety of aliens. At the end of every few levels, players fight a larger alien in a boss fight. Players score points by killing a large number of aliens in a short period of time, or by killing them in special ways, such as by using explosions or shooting them in the head. These points can be used to upgrade the player character, for example by boosting his resistance to damage or by increasing the amount of ammunition that he is able to carry. Players are able to carry two weapons at a time, and also have a pistol with unlimited ammunition. The player character can use both human- and alien-manufactured weapons in the game, and alien weapons use a cool-down period instead of having to reload. Weapons in the game include assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, and miniguns.[1][2][3] The game is intentionally difficult; its easiest difficulty level is called "challenging", and the next easiest difficulty level is called "hard".[3]
Alien Rage takes place on an asteroid which humans and an alien species known as Vorus were jointly mining for Promethium, a highly efficient but extremely dangerous source of energy. After the Vorus turn on the humans and wipe the miners out for violating the agreement of not weaponizing Promethium as planet-cracking weapon, Jack, the player character, is sent to the mining facility to kill the aliens and destroy the facility.[1][2]
Alien Rage was first announced in early April 2012, under the name Alien Fear. The game was to be developed using Unreal Engine 3 by City Interactive's Bydgoszcz Studio, and would have a cooperative gameplay (co-op) mode.[6] The first screenshots from the game were released two months later, in June 2012.[7] In May 2013 the game's name was changed to Alien Rage, and two months later it was announced that the game would be released on the personal computer, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on 24 September 2013.[8][9] The game was eventually released on 24 September 2013 for Windows, 18 October 2013 for the Xbox 360, and 21 October 2013 for the PlayStation 3, with and ESRB rating of Mature.[10][11][12]
Alien Rage received average to poor reviews upon release. At Metacritic, a video game review aggregator, the Windows version of the game received an average score of 52 out of 100, based on 27 reviews, while the Xbox 360 version revived a score of 46, based on 10 reviews.[16][17][B]
The game was heavily criticized for its lack of originality.[3][4][18][20] Daniel Shannon of GameSpot remarked that "If you have played a first-person shooter made in the last 10 years, then you have already experienced most of what Alien Rage has to offer.", and continued that "You've seen these weapons before, and you've shot these enemies before".[4] Reviewers especially took issue with the lack of creativity in level design, which Destructoid's Jim Sterling called "tedious corridors full of identical, monotonous, brainless combat encounters".[18] Hardcore Gamer's Nikola Suprak commented that several of the levels he played through were visually indistinct from one another, before saying that "level after level of redundant action and repetitive encounters ultimately drag the game down".[20] Critics also noted that the game had a number of technical issues. Sterling ran into two situations where glitches would not allow him to progress without restarting the level,[18] while Sam Turner of The Digital Fix experienced dramatic drops in frame rate during gameplay, and crashed to desktop several times.[5]
The game's multiplayer experience was received better than its single player campaign. Writing for Gaming Nexus, Jeff Kintner said that the "multiplayer is fun, if a bit repetitive". While Kintner expressed a desire for additional, objective-based, types of multiplayer, he praised the team deathmatch mode's intensity.[2] GameSpot's Daniel Shannon also commented on the limited number of multiplayer options, but went on to say that "For what it's worth, the action is fast-paced, and the maps are well designed for a balanced multiplayer experience."[4]
This game is a lot of fun. One of the best arcade FPS I have played. I would rate it a 5/10 difficulty and should take 8 to 15 hrs to complete depending on you skills. I would not recommend starting this game on brutal unless you enjoy stress in your life!!! Even on the lowest difficulty you will die pretty quick. The aliens are very aggressive and will seek you out. You goal here is to unlock the last set of perks which include the overcharged pistol perk. With this and the two health perks(50% more health and 50% recharge when near death) equipped it will make your brutal run a bit easier. Make sure aim assist is equipped and spam the shit out of the LT and RT ( old call of duty veteran trick) and you should breeze tru most of the game. I completed the game on the lowest difficulty and about the third chapter on brutal I unlocked all the perks. Everything carries over. There are no collectables cheevos, but there are audio logs and green pyramids(score bonus) that are in each level to help get your score up. The bosses are a bitch but once you figure out there routines, you can get past them. You will die a lot!! The music and look of the game is very good for an arcade game. I would call it a mix of halo and gears. The red alien rifle is a beast and plenty of ammo laying around. But once you unlock the pistol overcharge perk it is the only gun you will need. You have unlimited ammo. Some of the boss fights I was able to kill them in a matter of seconds spamming the LT and RT triggers. If you enjoy FPS and have 15 bucks to spare this is your game!! Don't know if any one is doing a guide, but if you have any questions about a part I will try to answer you post.
So far, 2/3 of the way through the game, I've found that the upgraded pistol is the best weapon. I'm now taking down bosses in less than 10 seconds with it on easy difficulty. I feel almost if I am using a cheat for that pistol. I will be playing through again on brutal.
I agree. Some of the bosses you will kill while they are just standing there and your guy is still talking. spamming the triggers you can take out everbody fast. Did you replay some chapters to get enough points to unlock that perk???
Yes! I replayed the first two chapters a few times to perk up a little because I was having a real problem with that first boss and to avoid getting frustrated, I replayed the next few a number of times before the next boss. All the way to unlocking "all of the perks." Now its a cake walk. Still having fun.
You should be close to unlocking them if you finished the story on the lowest difficulity. But you could replay a few chapters before starting the brutal run. Just depends on how much time you want to spend. The health perk is the third set you unlock. You get more points for headshots, explosions, and multi kills. Good luck man.
Tips for those that want to complete this game. Do your first playthrough on easy, and upon beating the game, grind out score until you unlock your last perk, and you'll breeze through the game on Brutal..
Taking cover in Alien Rage is weird, as it doesn't seem to exist for the benefit of the hero. Bullets often find their way into his flesh through seemingly solid barriers, and grenade splash damage nearly always leaks through. The regenerating health takes so long to kick in that enemies usually storm the player's position before it takes effect, and worst of all, there's no real alternative to ducking behind these dubious outcrops of ephemeral safety because staying out in the open is certain death.
Further confusing the issue of what type of shooter Alien Rage is trying to be, it likes to bark out hilariously out-of-place verbal confirmations as certain kill types are triggered. "Headshot!" it'll warble after some alien's face vaporizes into a fine mist, followed by "Double Kill!," "Multi Kill!" and all that sort of nonsense. It seems to be doing its level best to lure players out into a position where they can get massacred by pointlessly chasing after these equally pointless awards. Oddly enough, it doesn't bark out stuff like "Killed through cover!," or "Last checkpoint was five minutes ago, d**kbag!"
The story's similarly terrible, with awful, awful humor peppering the experience like lice crawling on a bug ridden mattress. Anyone who doesn't want Baldhead McGeneric Bastardson (or whatever the hero's called) to die a comically horrific death is playing it wrong. Nothing he says is funny. Nothing his friends say is funny. His enemies don't fare any better. "Say hello to my little friend?" Ha ha! It's a movie reference! How original!
There's also a multiplayer mode, though the amount of players online at the moment is incredibly low. Last time I checked post-release, there were a grand total of seven players on the servers, all in one game. As soon as I entered, it turned out that there were only four. It's tough to ascertain how competent the multiplayer is given such a desolate environment to test it out in, but from my brief sessions it looks like bog-standard fare.
Alien Rage may look the part, but it absolutely fails on numerous levels. It gives me no pleasure at all to report on how unremittingly terrible the campaign is, nor how I'd rather have eaten a bowl of festering mud than grimly chew my way through the later stages of the game. Adding insult to injury, Alien Rage caps it all off with a final boss battle that's such an atrocious pile of cheap-shot garbage that everyone involved in its design should probably be jailed for crimes against humanity in an airless room deep below the bowels of the earth.
