That is a nifty idea. You could submit a feature request in the Blockly repository, though I must note that it is unlikely that we will be able to dedicate any engineering time to it in the foreseeable future. A better approach might be to write a plugin for Blockly that does this. There are already a few existing plugins that provide alternative toolbox designs so it should be reasonably straightforward for anyone familiar with HTML + CSS + JS to create a new plugin using a similar approach.

i wish blockly added 2 col category menus when blockly was 12 years old

and, i don't login to githup cuz W4scools is better

Hi,

I'd be willing to create a third party plugin within the next few weeks that does this. I'll also see about making it a first party plugin. I'll update you here once I finish.

This design was used in Scratch 2.0 and is used in Snap!.

Also, it's worth noting that GitHub is a platform focused on sharing code, where W3Schools is a platform for education.

This is a complicated feature to implement, but I'm working on it.

It's actually pretty close to being done, just a few kinks to work out.

Hi,

Here's what I've got so far:

Unfortunately, it doesn't look very good with long blocks because the flyout expands past the toolbox. (see this related thread)

As such, I'll have to delay release until Blockly 12, when vertical scrolling becomes possible.

At that point I'll also be able to update the z-index of the flyout in a less hacky way.

I'll continue to update you here once Blockly 12 is released and I have the time to update this project.

I'm sorry but I don't have time to take all these screenshots and changing the renderers. I will update you when the plugin is ready.

I'm also not sure about the validity of your claim regarding the minimalist renderer.
