Blockly graduates from Google

On November 10, 2025, the Blockly project and key Blockly team members will transition from Google to the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

ANNOUNCEMENT

After 12 years of growth at Google, the move to Raspberry Pi Foundation aligns with a shared commitment to Blockly's long-term growth as a core developer tool for computer science education and block-based coding.

What this means for you

  • No Changes Required: Existing projects do not need to change anything about how they use Blockly.

  • Remaining Free & Open Source: Blockly will continue to be free and open source under its existing Apache 2.0 license.

  • Continued Support: The core Blockly team is committed to ongoing feature development and support from our new home.

We are excited about this next chapter. You can read the full announcements on both the Google and Raspberry Pi blogs, and visit our detailed FAQ.

Thank you,

Rachel on behalf of the Blockly Team

And on a personal note: I'm going to work for the Raspberry Pi Foundation as the head of their new Blockly team, starting November 10!

I'm stoked about RPF as Blockly's new home. We're working behind the scenes to make this transition seamless for you as developers--this forum will still work, the code will still be on GitHub, and so on.

Cheers,
Rachel

I share in the excitement, and I really do applaud the forward movement and congratulate you, Rachel. Still I wish to ask, Is there anything at all, even the tiniest little alteration or requirement that I might want to look for, like perhaps Blockly logos and their use? Or some possible effect on a server or browser or device or version or update or terms of use or packaging or feature?

Thank you very much.

The roadmap and upcoming features that I discussed at the summit are still applicable, including screenreader support and keyboard navigation in core.

A few specific details:
- We'll transfer the GitHub projects to the RPF organization. GitHub will manage redirects.
- Documentation will move to the new blockly.com site (but not immediately, and there will be redirects).
- Logos, attribution, etc will stay the same.
- Publishing will still be through npm, under the same packages.
- We're still not going to support Internet Explorer.

Cheers,
Rachel

Hello, I wanted to let you all know that I will also be joining the Raspberry Pi Foundation to continue working on Blockly, so you'll still see me around. I can't wait for this next chapter and we'll be around to answer any questions or concerns that come up.

Best,
Maribeth

I too will be moving over to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and am likewise really looking forward to it, and to continuing to answer questions around here!

I have decided to start my own gig, and my first project is with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, where I will provide support for Blockly's events and marketing, and help with the initial transition!

I'm excited to stay close with this group!

Yes, there is a small team that builds and maintains Blockly, writes documentation, and runs developer summits.

Running an open source project is a lot of work!

"Hopefully the move goes smoothly." -- In business, I never consider this to be the most hopeful statement, though it may be realistic. Also I like to give an acquisition six months to get everything going smoothly. I hope there is not any pain, and after that I hope there is not more than six months of pain. 😀

FWIW, there is an existence proof that something like this can work out just fine.  App Inventor was spun out of Google to a non-profit organization (MIT) and has done pretty well since then.

Why is this happening after Qualcomm acquired Arduino?

Hi,

Blockly is not related to Qualcomm and Arduino. Please keep posts to this forum on topic.

Best,
Rachel
