Microsoft and micro:bit launched their 'MakeCode for the micro:bit' 2025 update, including major accessibility improvements like keyboard navigation for blocks. This work was developed with Blockly and catalyzed by the Accessibility Fund projects.
For the first time, the block editor is fully navigable using only a keyboard. This groundbreaking feature makes block-based coding accessible to users with motor or mobility challenges who may have difficulty using a mouse.
The Enter
key is used to select and edit items, while a special "Move mode" (activated with the M
key) allows for precise block placement. Users can enable keyboard controls via the Settings menu or by simply pressing the Tab
key.
