The scenario is set in the year 2070. Global warming has melted the Arctic ice cap, which has raised the global sea level so that the coasts were flooded.[4] As a result, many old cities have vanished under the ocean, and much of what was once highland has been turned into chains of new islands. Responsibility for settling and exploiting these new frontiers is given to a select group of people, who captain mobile ocean-going bases known as Arks.
The game has three factions: The Eden Initiative (referred to as the "Ecos"), Global Trust (referred to as the "Tycoons"), and the S.A.A.T. (referred to as the "Techs"). Ecos are environmental and build sustainable cities, but are inefficient and slow to expand. Tycoons are industrious and expand quickly, but have problems with pollution and dwindling resources. The Tech is a support faction available to the other two, and they are useful in researching the latest and most powerful technologies. The Techs are only available later in the game when 10,000 credits are donated to their cause.
In Anno 2070, politics are no longer defined by countries, boundaries, religions, races, etc., but how humans choose to produce energy. All humankind rally under one global government where the three main factions of the game control the world's decisions. Players can also vote for a World President and vote in Senate Council. Participation will give different effects to all players, depending on who is president or what bill was passed, until the next cycle of voting begins. For example, voting for the Tycoons' CEO Skylar Banes will increase productivity of manufacturing buildings.
Players can also gain achievement and rewards from just playing the game. Players can customize their Ark to fit personal preference, which is only for aesthetics, as well as gaining special rewards that affect gameplay.
The gameplay includes "World Events"; special missions offered only for a limited time, allowing all players to band together and complete the missions. Completing missions will reward players depending on how many people participate.
There are also "Current Events", where a player can complete a particular quest for one of the three factions to gain rewards. Current Events change daily, unlike World Events, which can be around for several months.
The game was protected by Tags SolidShield with a 3 machine activation limit and always needed to be connected to the Internet while playing the game. Changing hardware could use up one activation. After the last activation was used, 1 was regained every 30 days.[5]
This generated wide criticism as legitimate players faced different problems with such online only systems.[6] In 2012, Ubisoft decided to release a universal patch removing the online only DRM from several games including Anno 2070.[7] The SolidShield DRM with its activation limit was entirely removed on July 8, 2020.[8]
In October 2012, Ubisoft published an expansion to the game called Deep Ocean, which adds a new civilization level for the tech faction and new resources and products to satisfy that faction's new needs. It also offers a new energy source, the geothermal power plant, which may cause a new natural disaster: a tsunami. Five new campaign missions introduce these new features. It also adds many new factors to the game, which completely changes the way the game is played, most notably when playing with the Tech Faction.
Critical reception for Anno 2070 has been positive since the game's release, with a majority of critics considering it a big step forward in the Anno series. Criticism of the game is heavily influenced by the requirement to be always online to access all game options. Without being online the player can still access an offline mode, but one can't edit their own profile information, and the player is unable to update their Ark base, place cargo into it, or upgrade it with equipment. Early reception at the time of release was also negatively influenced by constant crashes, server issues, and critics pointed out that the game worked better on pirated versions instead of the official one with Ubisoft server access.
Ubisoft recently announced it would pull the plug on a number of its older games, stopping online and multiplayer support. Titles affected by this move include Anno 2070, Far Cry 3, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, and Assassin's Creed 2.
The team behind the city-building and economic simulation game will now "dedicate some of [its] development resources to work on upgrading Anno 2070's aged online services infrastructure to a new system".
That being said, the team has stressed it can't guarantee it will be "able to successfully upgrade/replace the old services as [it'd] like to." All the same, it is a pretty nice move from the developers who clearly have their community's best interests at heart.
Ubisoft previously stated the reason it decided to close these online services was to enable it to focus "resources on delivering great experiences for players who are playing newer or more popular titles".
I hope you can save and preserve anno 2070. I can, still remember the day I got Anno 2070. I had to go with my parents to the city, but 11 year old me did not want to. In the car ride I was playing Anno 1701 on my ds. I will admid it, my dad pirated the game and put it on a R4 card.
After a day of being bored in the city my mom wanted to reward me for being so patient all day. So she took me to the toys store. Walking into the store the first think I saw was the CD for anno 2070. At the time I thought Anno 1701 was a one time off game, but that day I discovered it was a whole series of games. I begged my mom to get it, she wanted me to get a fysical toy not a game that I probably would lose interest it quickly after.
All research and ark items are tied to the player's UPlay account. This information is, as far we know, not stored locally, and thus cannot be accessed in offline mode. If you are playing a continuous game where the "Ark Storage" setting was "On", and are disconnected, the Ark Storage will be greyed-out until re-connected.
The no ship available error is caused by a bug in the cracked version of Anno 2070 that affects the online features of the game. The crack disables the connection to the Ubisoft servers, which are required for some aspects of the game, such as voting, monthly missions, and ark functionality. The ark is a special ship that stores your upgrades and items and can be used across different maps and modes.
We have worked hard this summer to update the game, upgrade and replace various legacy online services and test if it all runs smoothly in the end. Thank you to the testers from our community who helped us find some newly introduced bugs.
After installing said update, you will be able to do World Events and vote in the regular council elections as you used to. You will also keep your full progression and be able to continue your existing savegames including your Arks and their content.
Hello we are facing the same problem as in commen below.I have bought the complete version just 1 week ago and wanted to play with my friend! but when launching the game i can only has access to the base game and no dlc or deep sea possible. it is really frustrating! Please help to solve the issue!
Thank you for your work on the game.
Anno 2070 is still the best Anno I played.
Unfortunately, since the update, all my save games disappeared. This is very unfortunate. I loved to perfect and expand my island world. Now, this is a setback as all the hundreds of hours I lovingly put into the game are now gone.
I only played now and then but always loved to move on. Now I would have to start all over again which is really sobering.
Dear Game Devoloper,
I was able to solve the problem. The problem was that I renamed myself in Uplay. Since the game was not updated for a long time, this was not a problem. So after the update, a new folder with the new name was created where the new game data should be saved. The old game data was still in the old folder with the old Uplay name.
In summary, everything works normally again. I am really happy about it.
Ich habe 2x Anno 2070 auf verschiedenen PCs, um es zu zweit spielen zu knnen. Auf beiden Rechnern strzt das Spiel seit heute ab, sobald man im Hauptmen des Spiels ist.
Kann jemand was dazu sagen? Wird der Fehler noch behoben?
I have the same issue but only since today. After the first days since the update everything except a few things were okay but since today when I am at the loading screen for the main menu the game closes without any error message.
Does anyone else has the problem that you can now only build the statistics center and not the central statistics?
I purchased the DLC for it a long time ago and had that building until before the update.
