Ourcurrent 10-digit serial numbering format that started in November of 2009 identifies where the guitar was built, the start date, and the assigned number of the guitar on that day's production schedule. For example, the serial number for the first guitar built in the El Cajon (USA) factory on July 6, 2014 is 1107064001. See the explanation below:
From 1993 until the end of 1999, each Taylor guitar featured a nine-digit serial number that pinpoints when work began on that guitar, along with its series and production position. See the explanation for serial number 980311301 below:
January 2000 - October 2009, the serial number expanded from 9 to 11 digits to accommodate the four-digit year designation. Other than the first four digits noting the year, it's decoded the same as the 9-digit serial numbers. See the explanation for serial number 20070311301 below:
The two oldest verified serial numbers are 00109 and 10109. Record keeping in the early days was spotty and it's uncertain which guitar is actually the first one, but these two were built within the first few months of Taylor Guitars production.
The Building Intelligence Center assists home inspectors, commercial building inspectors, contractors, service technicians, insurance providers, home owners, and property managers in decoding the age of mechanical appliances such as furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, packaged rooftop units (RTU's), packaged terminal air conditioners (PTAC's), and water heaters.
The age of a furnace, air conditioner, water heater, or boiler can play an important part of upkeep and maintenance, and can help anticipate the likelihood of impending repairs or replacement. Mechanical systems do not have an infinite service life. The industry average service life for most combustion furnaces is 15-20 years; most air conditioners and heat pumps is 10-15 years; and most storage tank type water heaters is 8-12 years. With routine maintenance and servicing, the service life of these systems can often be extended by 5-10 year, or even more!
The date of manufacture for many of these appliances is often encoded within the appliance serial number. The Building Intelligence Center provides the largest resource library with the most comprehensive lists of mechanical appliance brand names with most examples of their various serial number styles and date codes.
Upkeep and professional servicing of the heating and cooling systems and other mechanical systems is a critical part of routine building maintenance. For improved safety and longevity of these systems, the Building Intelligence Center recommends inspections and professional servicing be performed by a qualified inspector and/or service technician/contractor seasonally or annually.
To determine the age of an HVAC system or water heater, begin your research by locating the brand name and serial number on the HVAC system or water heater. Visit the appropriate index page from the menu or buttons above where alphabetized lists of manufacture brand names have been provided. Select the brand name for the particular mechanical system, and then locate the example serial number style that most closely resembles the serial number located on your system. The largest list of examples in the industry will help determine if and where the manufacture date has been coded within the serial number for the unit.
We continue to add more brands, more serial number styles, and new resources to the site including an IRC Building Code reference index for commercial property inspectors and home inspectors, small appliance (kitchen) serial number codes, brand histories resource index, home inspector continuing education links, and much more! Some of these new resources are reserved for members who have joined the Building Intelligence Center.
Serial number formats vary by manufacturer, with the installation date placed differently in each case. Check the brand name on your water heater and then use the following guide to determine the age of your unit:

The forum is! Just bring the S/N in question, post it here and you'll have it decoded here in a matter of minutes. I know the "Alpha" character versions backwards and forwards as these are the years that I prefer.
The link you posted has the correct info. That whole web site (and related sites) is from Kelly Holsten and wife Audrey. They did the site for NOSValves, Magnequest, DIYCable and more. He drops by here every once in awhile, until we chase him off again...
there shouldn't be a week 79, as there are only 52 weeks in a year. Note that the serial numbers started with 1 for each week, so it looks as though there were very productive weeks on the factory floor.
I wonder what the record was for the most Heresies they ever churned out in a day. I think Trey posted some lifetime numbers for various series, but you have to look at the time period to get a feel for how hard these folks worked!
What I was referring to in my original post was the Klipsch paper tags that I have seen pictured on eBay on Heresy, Forte, and Cornwall with serial numbers starting with the first two digits between 84 and 89 and the third and fourth digits were some two digit number larger than 52 ( I used "79" as an example) that do not seem to follow the format YY WW #### since a year only has 52 weeks (53 if they included partial production weeks).
Also, am I correct to assume that the first 9 weeks of a year would be represented by 01-09 for 1984-1989 production and for the 1990-1997 production the serial number would start with three digits between 001-099 for the first 99 days of the year?
Try single quotes instead of double quote marks. And you need to put angle brackets around the line instead of the codes for them (you put in ampersandltsemicolon on the left, etc, which would display the less than angle bracket, like this: I have pair of Chorus II that I need to know more about before refinishing. I'd like whatever info is available, but specifically manufacture date and wood/finish type. Also, what is the recommendation for crossover rehabilitation? Has anyone tried to match the factory color and finish using birch veneer?
For example, the serial number of my Kenmore dryer, MB1402320, indicates that it was built in the 14th week of 1992. Whirlpool Model Number Codes An alpha code in the model number indicates the year the model was introduced. Before 1981, the second digit of the model number contained the code. After 1981, the eight digit contains the code.
Whirlpool has hidden permanent date codes stamped into the metal of their appliances. Except for the shorten length, the hidden date code is the same as on the paper or foil tag. The problem is finding where the date code is stamped into the metal.
