Hello Blind Travellers!
I was going to wait until a few more people join the list, before kicking
off, but right now there are 12 of us and that's not so bad to start with.
If either of you can think of other blind people who enjoy traveling, do ask
them to join. They can either email me directly to get an individual
invitation or visit the website and click on Join the group. The more input
we get, the better.

So, to start us off on an interesting topic, I recommend this article about
a blind english travel enthusiast.
http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/news/BLIND-MAN-WORLD/article-3046214-detail/a
rticle.html

If you have any oppinion on this, or would like to submit any related info
to the list, don't hesitate to reply. You're also welcome to start a new
topic of your own.

I haven't written up any particular rules for this list yet. But I suppose
we are agreed that we respect each other's oppinions, don't sware at each
other, don't use the list for political or religious purposes and generally
maintain a friendly atmosphere.

Let's get this list going then. May the road rise with you all.
Cheers, Robbie

Kerala

The guide on the phone

Next time, do not be disheartened if your search for a tour guide in Kerala
goes in vain. Even without one, you can walk around any tourist destination
listening to the wonders of its cultural and historical heritage. All that
you need is your mobile phone.

Tourists can look forward to Kerala Tourism's 'Audio Guide,' a recorded,
spoken commentary of the tourist spots of God's Own Country, to go on a
self-guided
tour.

Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan launched the guide and the
'Bring Home a Friend' initiative of Kerala Tourism involving the Malayali
diaspora
here on Wednesday night.

The multi-language 'Audio Guide,' the first by a State, covers all tourist
destinations. Both initiatives are part of Kerala Tourism's efforts to use
modern
technology to promote tourism.

To access the 'Audio Guide,' launched in association with MobME Wireless
Solutions, a mobile-phone value-added services company, dial 9048 755555.
The tourist
will be prompted to enter the unique identification number of the
destination that will be displayed on the screen. On doing so, the 'Audio
Guide' will
start speaking.

Listen to the description of specific spots and details of exhibits by
entering the code number displayed next to the exhibit. "It is a
path-breaking initiative
in the country. The idea is that everybody today has a cellphone, so instead
of hiring an expensive headphone-based audio guide about a tourist spot, you
only need to pay for a phone call. At the same time, it has all the
facilities of a headphone-based audio guide," says V. Venu, Secretary,
Tourism.

The users can fast-forward, rewind, pause or replay the description.

The 'Audio Guide' can be accessed from any part of the globe round the clock
every day. Standard call rates will apply. The languages include English,
Hindi
and Malayalam.

Hello Brian,

Welcome to the list. I am Geetha, originally from India, currently living in London.

Could you tell us something about the situation of blind people in Burma? Are there schools for the blind, or do they attend regular schools? Are they able to find employment? How is the transport situation there? Are totally blind people able to travel independently in buses and trains? How do they cope with life in general?

Regards
Geetha
