Hello all,

I have been playing around with blender for a few weeks now.  I am not a 3d artist or computer graphics professional.  I am learning because I want to build things that I can't afford or have room to build for real.

I have been having some issues lately with lighting.  Where is the best place to start to find answers besides searching for tutorials and through forums?

Is this an appropriate place to start a topic for a question?

Thanks, and hopefully I can make it to a meeting sometime.

Hey Peter,

Thanks for contacting Blender User Group Utah.  Just a bit of a note before I give some suggestions.  We haven't been able to get together for Blender user Group for about a year and half now.  My brothers and I are the ones that were usually organizing it, and because of low attendance, it wasn't worth it, at the time, to keep holding the meetings.  So, with that being said, we would like to do more meetings in the future, but it doesn't look like a big possibility at this moment.

But I don't mind helping out when I can, so go ahead and ask all the questions you wish, and I I will try to help out the best I can.

So, when you say 'lighting', do you mean what and how the light options work in Blender, or are you looking to learn more about setting up good lighting for a scene?

For learning about good lighting in a scene, there are quite a few photographic lighting tutorials on the net.  Just search that term and you will find a wealth of knowledge on that subject.

As for learning about lights in Blender, here are a few resources.

http://www.blender.org/education-help/tutorials/light/  This is through the official educational resources on blender.org.  I have been through most of these tutorials myself, and cover the basics really well.

http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.4/Tutorials/Lighting/BSoD  Here is a wiki resource.  A bit more technical, but learning what is here will allow you to really know how to use the tools available.

http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/mastering-lighting/  Here is a great video tutorial if you don't fell like reading.  He covers the basics really well, and some more advanced techniques.

If you are looking for more specific information on a specific option,  just google 'Blender (whatever option your are looking up) option/setting' and you should be able to find some info.

I hope this helps to get you started, let me know if you have any other questions.
