I have begun the process of getting Google's AdSense into the site (or
blog as it is right now), not for the pure delight of generating
revenue from ads being placed on the site, it is entirely put into
motion to FUND this website, the domain and the future developments of
www.blendertorenderman.org.
I really did not want to do this, I really wanted to keep this site ad
free as long as possible. However due to financial difficulties, the
plan to revamp the site and the fact that Blender to Renderman is
considered more than just an experiment, I have broke down and sold
out (lol). Really it's not that big of a deal, BlenderNation does it
and they too started to do it purely to fund it and keep it around
because it is a very cool site for being a news blog.
That being said, once it becomes official it will be announced, I am
sure there will be mixed feelings over it and I still am cringing over
it myself. This was something I have been thinking about since the
domain name was bought, I just wanted to see how well we did. So I
have accessed the analytics and have been pleasantly surprised.
Between Dec 13, 2008 and Dec 13, 2009 we have had an increase of %25
site hits.
29,588 visits
52,331 page hits
62.54% New Visits
google (organic) 10,749 36.33%
(direct) ((none)) 5,136 17.36%
blendernation.com (referral) 3,737 12.63%
blender.org (referral) 1,942 6.56%
blenderartists.org (referral) 725 2.45%
That is just this year alone. Does not compare to other sites like
Blender.org for instance however for being something that started as a
free forum in 2006, this has grown to such a degree that even I am
having a hard time believing. Since we officially started on Feb 13
with 1 hit we have had :
53,228 Visits
34,082 Absolute Unique Visitors
90,218 Pageviews
Again not anything like Blender.org with their 3 million (or so?)
visit milestone but still not bad for something that started as a
personal quest.
THIS is why I am starting AdSense, not for personal greed... to
continue this sites funding via ads. Considering the way ads are
placed in other sites in a similar fashion I will make sure that these
also will not impede too much with the look or functionality. When the
site gets a fresh look I will do the same there as well. Hopefully
this will not drive away people, I know that some of them are very
anti-corporate and the thought of an ad placement is just wrong.
However the threat of loosing the domain has already come and gone due
to lack of funding, thankfully some of us are more than understanding
and willing to offer support (you know who you are) for the greater
good. Simply put we do not want to loose the domain name
blendertorenderman.org. While it is just the domain name at this time
that we are concerned about, in the future it will also encompass
server space. Server space is not cheap. If I begin the AdSense now it
may just be possible to generate enough income to barely fund the
domain name in a year, if more comes in then the revamp of the site
will be addressed.
This post is going longer than expected. I shall leave it as that and
just see what happens. Still cringing here.
