So what gives? I tried both Win32 builds posted on google code and
none of them work. The language simply refuses to change and remains
english even after restart etc. Is there some special procedure that
needs to be followed? It does detect my language in the console at
startup, but the interface is still the same.

But my issue is that it simply doesn't work, and there are no debug
messages in the console to give a hint... I don't know how to describe
it, or what are the "steps to reproduce it". Is there a debug build
that will output more information? I'm using Windows XP SP3 and it
detects the bulgarian language. I have tried Chinese, French,
Japanese... it detects them in console, but the interface is always
English. I have already tried updating the .mo files as mentioned in
the wiki, but nothing happens.

Where did you get your version of garlic?

Some of the old releases have some bugs. Maybe you can try building one from svn, if you are familiar with it.

I am using the newest one from GraphicAll, posted on Google code,
r40246. I am not familiar with how to build them, but i doubt this is
the issue, as someone else has had the same problem on their system.
It may have something to do with the OS, is there any way to get more
debug info from blender?

Also, i'm not sure if it's related, but when closing the "User
Preferences" window, the console outputs "<!> Event has invalid
window".

Ok, i've tested this on another computer and the UI is translated
properly. What could cause GNU gettext to stop working like this? GTK
programs like Inkscape do not have this issue with the UI translation,
it happens only in Blender 2.4 and 2.5. I have advanced text services
enabled for all programs.

We just noticed a bug of NULL pointer. I have fixed it and asked dfelinto to help rebuild a release.

I have tested it but it's still the same. The problem is somewhere
with my system configuration, because it works on other computers. It
also doesn't work with Blender 2.4. Do you have any idea what could be
disabling the gettext/language support?

Not sure yet. Xiao just fixed a bug and Dailai helped to rebuild the Garlic version. Same link in the wiki manual, please try to use the latest version again for test.

That is the version i tested it with, exactly when it was posted some
minutes ago. I don't think the bug is related, because there are no
problems with detecting the language, it just can't display it on my
machine.

Friends, how are you ?
Ok, lets solve some of those ;)
Some tips about Garlic:

Dalai's build requires the folder to be placed under
a root of C:. The problem is related to more than 8 subdirs
inside Blenders relative paths.
I've tested here after a full install of 2.59 and everything goes fine.

A Full + visual C++ 2008 Redistributable and a Full Python 2.32
will do the trick. Unpack Dalai's Build into C: D: or any other
directory next to the Root and start Blender.

I already had these installed (Visual C++ 2005, 2008 and 2010, Python
2.6 and Python 3.1), and was running from C:\ ... So it's not that :/

I have some problems, then again:

Is it a showstopper or is it a question of language changes   ?

You can read my first post for details, but basically the language
function doesn't work. You can change the option, but the interface
always remains in english.

Did you follow those steps ?

First, go to User Preferences,
Go to the ''System'' Tab
Under ''Custom weight paint range'', click
on ''Use International Fonts'' to activate other Languages.
Then click on ''Select Language'', and change to your
local language. Then click on Translate.
select ''Translate'' for Interface and Tooltips.

Do not forget to put your .po compiled file in your
apropriate directory for your localized language.

For me, it's under pt_BR directory and it's the same name
blender.mo (compiled by poedit ) you are using.

You can also rename your old file in order to avoid deleting
if you wish, to recover if something goes wrong.

Happy Blending !

OPs, a typo...

When I was saying

Do not forget to put your .po compiled file in your
apropriate directory for your localized language.

It's :

Do not forget to put your .mo compiled file in your
apropriate directory for your localized language.

Yes yes, of course... When i said that even 2.49 doesn't work, that
should hint that the problem has nothing to do with the blender
settings. This used to work before (on 2.49), so i'm trying to get
some more info on the relation between blender and the OS to get to
the root of the problem. It is most likely a wrong setting somewhere
in XP, but i have tried all regional/language settings without any
result.
