Singer-composer Anu Malik is being called out on Twitter after Naor Gilon, Ambassador of Israel to India, shared an audio clip of a Bollywood patriotic song that sounds similar to the Israeli National Anthem. Notably, Mr. Malik had copied the exact tune of Israel's national anthem titled Hatikvah for his song 'Mera Mulk Mera Desh' from Ajay Devgn's 1996 film 'Diljale'.

A fourth added, ''We are touched by the Israeli Ambassador's appreciation of the Indian patriotic melody. It is indeed a beautiful song that expresses the love and pride for our country, our land, and our people. It is also a song that reflects the values of peace, progress, and harmony that India and Israel share. We stand with Israel in friendship and solidarity.''

In the past too, Anu Malik has been accused of copying other musicians' work on several occasions. The singer, who has won the National Award for Best Music Direction for the 2000 film Refugee, has been called out for copying the music of Wham!'s song Last Christmas for his 1995 track Dil Mera Churaya Kyun, the tune of Linear's Sending All My Love for Neend Churayi Meri from Ishq and the music of Toto Cutugno's L'Italiano for the song Nasha Ye Pyar Ka Nasha.

The song's tune has an interesting history going all the way back to 16th century Italy! Before going into that history, it's easier to state that the tune is now most popular as Israel's national anthem!! Yes, Israel's national anthem, called Hatikvah, has the same tune as Diljale's 'Mera Mulk Mera Desh'. Or, the other way round!

Hatikvah's melody was composed by Samuel Cohen, in 1888. It is said that Cohen mentioned his inspiration behind the melody as a Romanian song called 'Carul cu boi' that he had heard years ago. Listen to Carul cu boi.

The other song that Anu Malik composed for Bharat and was also plagiarized came out the next year, in 1997. The film? Border! The soundtrack was very popular for songs like 'Sandese Aate Hain' and 'Toh Chaloon'. But one particular song was earmarked specifically to rouse patriotic feelings in the audience. That was, helpfully called, 'Hindustan Hindustan'. The melody of the song was anything but Hindustan! Ironically, the song had a skeletal 4-line melody that was a platform to feature stirring dialogs by Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

The film has 8 songs. The music composer of this movie is Anu Malik.[4] The song "Mera Mulk Mera Desh" was copied from the Israeli national anthem "Hatikvah", which itself was sampled after the Italian song "La Mantovana".[5]

Diljale was a landmark in Madhoo's career.[6] Nisha Mehta of The Times of India said, "Not only do I love the heart-warming song Mera Mulk Mera Desh from Diljale but also I like the essence of the film. Ajay Devgn was too good in it.[7]
