The makers of Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi have dropped the highly-anticipated anthem titled 'Vijayi Bhava' today, on 9 January. The song aptly encapsulates the indomitable spirit and the patriotic fervour of Kangana Ranaut's warrior queen Rani Laxmibai.
The visual spectacle of the song with extravagant sets, exquisite detailing and colours is replete with patriotic lyrics that are designed to rouse audiences. As Rani Laxmibai sheds her adornments preparing herself for battle, Shankar Mahadevan's voice fills the frame. With her toddler in arms, the queen trains her army of women, formulates battle strategies even as an impending threat from the British colonisers loom large over her head.
Its official music launch took place on 9 January. The video song from Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi titled "Vijayi Bhava" was made available for public viewing on the same day.[36] Short video teasers of dialogues and prominent scenes of the film were posted on the Facebook page of Zee Studios for viewers.[37]
A new photo of Kangana Ranaut dressed as Rani Laxmibai has surfaced on social media. The picture in question is a candid shot from the Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi sets and shows Kangana with veteran choreographer Saroj Khan. A romantic song featuring Kangana and actor Jisshu Sengupta, who plays King Gangadhar Rao, her husband, in the historical drama, was shot recently at ND Studios in Karjat, reports DNA.
The mythification of Lakshmibai happened quickly after her death and in this rare case, India and the West are on the same side. Characters based on her began appearing in popular British novels, casting her as seductive and potentially deadly. In India there were also novels and songs, and eventually a TV series, Bollywood films, stamps and even computer games.
Who can forget AVMs Vazhkai in Tamil and its Hindi equivalent Bahar? Personally I find the 1951 film quite dated but the songs are an everlasting delight. I love the Hindi version in particular with its songs by Shamshad Begum. My personal favourites are Duniya ka mazaa le lo and Saiyan dil main aana re. Vyjayanthi was superb, particularly in the dance sequences.
The costumes for these were chiefly inspired by 19th century dresses worn by Maharajahs and Maharanis. No bare-chested Arjuna. No Alli in a kacchai. Long ago we had in our house collection an Arjuna in a turban, an alpaca coat, churidars and patent leather shoes. He still carried a bow and arrow!
It is good that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy let go of the period epic Thugs of Hindostan (2018), which ultimately got four average songs from Ajay-Atul, and found a similar project in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. The eight-song soundtrack for the Rani Laxmibai biopic gives the trio enough room to explore a range of moods within the patriotic period film template. Co-directed by Krish and Kangana Ranaut, who also plays the warrior queen Manikarnika will be released on January 25.
Much of the film involves Rani Laxmibai and her army going mano a mano with British forces on the battlefield. So, there are a bunch of songs with spirited dhols urging the listener to get up and fight.
