Fwd: A Sense of brightness and hope: VisionWalk on June 1st

Friends, I invite you to walk with me in the fight to end blindness. On June 1st, the Foundation Fighting Blindness will host its annual Triangle VisionWalk to raise money to fund research into retinal degenerative diseases. One of these conditions caused my own legal blindness. Stargardt's disease presents like age-related macular degeneration, which afflicts so many older friends and family members.The main difference is the age of diagnosis. Stargardt's struck when I was a small child. The Foundation has made the dream of a cue in my lifetime a reality with clinical trials for gene therapies and stem cell treatments for a wide range of inherited retinal conditions. Restoring sight was the subject of an opinion piece in a recent NYTimes "Seeing Really Is Believing: How cataract surgery changed my life" by Jennifer Finney Boylan."For those who get the surgery, the restoration of sight is miracle enough. But just as important, if not more, is restoring a sense of well-being. Studies show a strong correlation between cataracts and depression, especially in older adults. And so it was not just my vision that my childhood friend brought back to me. It was a sense of brightness and hope." I have, for the twelfth year, accepted the challenge of participating inVisionWalk, a big step in boosting research for retinal degenerative diseases, hosted by the Foundation Fighting Blindness!I am asking for your help and support in my fund-raising efforts by walking with me, either in person or in spirit.   Please help bring that "sense of brightness and hope" to me and to all our friends and family (and neighbors) who suffer from retinal degeneration.
