Like most of the Oakland underground and arts communities, the members of Blazing Star Oasis were stunned by the news of the tragic and deadly fire that broke out on Friday 3 December 2016 at the Ghost Ship warehouse housing the Satya Yuga art collective just 2.5 miles from our Bay Area Thelemic Temple home. While no active members of our Oasis are known to have been involved with this event, many of us were friends with several of those who remain missing or have been publicly confirmed as deceased by Oakland authorities in the last several days. Several of the lost shared a common thread with us in their interest in Thelema and the work of Aleister Crowley, in addition to contributing to Oakland art and culture as we also strive to do. There are many who feel the loss more keenly, and still we feel it.
As a religious and philosophical Thelemic organization, duly chartered by the United States Grand Lodge of Ordo Templi Orientis, our central public and private rite is Liber XV, the Gnostic Mass, publicly celebrated under the auspices of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica (Gnostic Catholic Church) every Sunday afternoon. Several members of the Oasis, and a number of non-member associates of those lost to the fire, have requested that we formally memorialize the dead, as is our custom, at upcoming celebrations of the Gnostic Mass. It is our fervent collective Will to meet these requests for all who will to participate.
The first such mass will be held at 4:18 PM Sunday 11 December 2016 at 130 East 12th Street, Oakland CA 94606. These ceremonies will be open to the public, though fire codes cap our attendance at 50 for each event. Only those names that have been released by Oakland authorities will be called aloud during the Collects, though we abstractly remember every week all “them from whose eyes the veil of life hath fallen....” To better accommodate all those who wish to attend, as well as to continue to remember those who may be named later, we will continue this practice each Sunday as long as necessary.
