Constructing the Satanic Witch: Church and MisogynyDo what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Join Tom Hatsis for an evening of thoughtful discussion that unravels the very origins of the “satanic witch.” Popular culture presents a witch as an evil old hag who flies through the air on a broom to a demonic congregation overseen by the Devil. This image helped justify the torture and execution of thousands of people during the Renaissance period. But how true to life was this supposedly evil witch? Many of the earliest trial records and theological anti-magic polemics portray not evil witches, but shamans and local healer-sorcerers. These village magicians provided a host of services from making charms, giving blessings, mixing medicines and psychoactive potions, and enacting revenge upon a perpetrator for a scorned client. None of these healers and sorcerers appears to have worshiped the Devil. In some cases, they seem to have been followers of pagan goddesses who, the women claimed, provided the source of their powers. How did these wise-women, lay-healers, and shamans come to be demonized in such a way? Doors open at 6:30pm. Love is the law, love under will.
