So I've got a bunch of free coins through promotions, and I'm always loath to use them and find it difficult to decide what to use them on, simply because fast passing a weekly series means I'll have to wait that much longer for the next chapter (2 weeks instead of 1 week if i used 1 fast pass, more weeks if I used more, etc.) Until you're stuck fast passing forever and having to buy coins just to read at the same pace as free users, except a few chapters ahead. Is it me or does that seem really pointless?
I guess it's most useful for daily pass webtoons though sadly there aren't a lot of those that I have on my list, and even there it seems a waste of the coins since it takes multiples of threes instead of 5 so some coins often go waste, and you can just wait a day and read it for free so it's not as much of an incentive as fast forwarding a weekly series.
doesn't matter to me. for one thing coins in other webtoon sites have always been cheaper than manga so i doubt it will hurt them. also, you can just read on pirated sites so it's a win/win either way. it is disappointing line isn't free anymore regardless. they were the only ones without pay nowadays.
If Webtoons adopts that style, you might just be able to get coins for free playing games or watching ads from the site. Course, they would have to make sure it's available in some ways based on reader locations and make sure ads don't cause possible malware. So you'd be able to support your creators and still do it...for free.
That, and you can just buy the lowest tier for coins as often as you can (meaning, when you have spending money that's not needed to go to important things like bills or food or whatever). I know for Tapas, the lowest buy is 1600 for $1.99, which is not that bad. It's not even a monthly payment either. At least with Tapas and Lezhin, you can just choose when to pay and that's just ONE payment until you decide to pay AGAIN.
I'm curious on the impact of overall readership and views if this change is implemented. Since webtoon has that "all-free" vibes to it that attracts readers. I have nothing against paid contents since I paid contents on other sites xD but as a new creator I'm worried since webtoon is the most effective platform to market new webcomic out there, since it's free. I know most readers are entitled, but I am nervous nonetheless. Hope there will be option to pay by ads, so not all of readers would bail out from reading. And I'm also curious what featured artists think about it.
I highly doubt webtoon will switch to pay to read... and I actually think it'd be bad for them to switch to pay to read. I mean I agree that creators should get paid and all that, but there are some changes you can make and some you can't. It's one thing to start with pay for content, or to implement it when your website/app is small, but when you're big and you suddenly add cost, people are gonna rage quit.
A lot of you are talking a bit idealistically and you're talking like these readers have money... I'm pretty sure the majority of my readers are like ages 9-15. I don't think those people have money or access to a credit card. which means they'd have to provide ads for farming coins- which as nice as that is, it limits the time they can spend reading actual comics. I mean at this point if they just want more ad money it makes more sense to incorporate more ads to each update.
it wouldn't surprise me if they stop offering featured comics for free even though they were free to read for a long time because an another popular webtoons app that's based in japan already switched from free to read to a pay to unlock system 2 years ago and they do pretty good even now despite the backlash and the lowered ratings they got in play store
and that app's parent company is NHN which is related to Naver that owns webtoon.

Interesting, I wonder when theyll send that out in the english version - I read in a discord that the features are already implemented in some englisch webtoons.
(just hope theyll do that for discover ones, too ;D)
When Webtoon initially offered fast pass, I thought this was a great way to support creators. Also, I was only fast passing a handful of Webtoon Originals. So, a few hundred coins went a long way. Last year, select series episodes cost went from 5 Coins to 7 Coins. This happened without warning. There were disgruntle comments here and there, but most people continued to fast pass.
