Custom select list

Has anyone built a behavior that takes the standard select tag, hides
it, and created a new dom element that can be styled as a drop down
and also behaves like a drop down?

I've done it a few times but it was more of a generic behaviour that just called an existing jQuery plugin inside the behaviour. It's fairly clean if you use options passed through from the sitemap. I'm not sure if there is a stdlib version built from the ground up however.

I actually end up just using community driven plugins like styleSelect however it is built on top of jQuery.
