Hello,

Good morning! For your information, there is a new online directory of
businesses and service providers in Malawi. Biz Directory MW, accessed
at http://www.bizdirectorymw.com/, serves as a meeting place for
businesses/service providers and potential customers in Malawi.
Customers may also rate and review the QUALITY of the services
provided thus also giving customers a platform to comment on the
services rendered to them by a business or service provider.

With the prevailing high unemployment among the youths in Malawi,
youths who are skilled and self-employed, e.g. in carpentry, plumbing,
designing, etc, can also use this platform to have their contacts and
skills listed so that potential customers may easily access them hence
promoting self-employment, job creation and self-reliance among youths
in Malawi.

The main aim of Biz Directory MW is to link up businesses and service
providers in Malawi, from Nsanje to Chitipa, whether large or small,
with potential customers such that at a click of a button, customers
should be able to access information on potential service providers at
a given location. Propelled by a powerful search engine, for example,
a search "plumbers Karonga" should list all potential plumbers in
Karonga, a search "restaurant Lilongwe" should list all potential
restaurants in Lilongwe, etc

Kind regards,

Bennett

Sounds good and progressive. Do we have an online payment system in
Malawi where we can buy local goods online through our local banks?
Online services like Paypal don't recognize the local(Malawian) banks.
By the way, I have heard of an online store being developed by a group
of Malawians.

No, not electronic currency, just a system on online payment in which
the banks and retailers are linked up. You complete your shopping
online.

Someone asked if there is an online payment system in malawi. I developed one based on mobile money. Im currently piloting it on www.ticsto.com and www.jukeboxmalawi.com. Main challenge: Malawians are slow learners and even members within the IT community are quite slow in showing interest and coming up with support.

We have a long way.

Wow! That's a great innovation, Flex! There are so many things which
are limiting the growth of the economy of Malawi, one of which is the
underutilization of technology! But I think we should not give up to
promote uptake of the same!

Keep on!

I think what we need is more people willing to take the initiative to develop this but most programmers in our country just like to talk the talk, very few walk the walk. My mobile money application interface is programmatically complete but anyone willing to try it would be required to develop a payment gateway for their shopping cart/ website. Due to time i have only developed the payment gateway for woocommerce so anyone willing to do ecommerce using wordpress is covered.

I wish entreprenuers and merchants would come up and be willing to take this up because even if we can come up with the best ecommerce system right now, content is always the king. The problem is our people are too slow in tech adoption so by the time they are ready, the whole payment gateway market will have been acquired and dominated by telcos and the local individual programmer will have lost out. Just like airtel money and mpamba rode over the original e-wallet, the pioneer always loses out.

The online directory and online payment system seem to be complementary innovations. After searching for products or services on the biz directory, one might wish to do payment transactions straightaway. This could be food for thought for the developers...

I wish we could share ideas on how these great innovations could be promoted. Though Malawians can be said to be technology laggards, awareness plays a bigger role; we may think of how WhatsApp found its way among Malawians. Otherwise, as Flex puts it, the telcos are very clever.

Very true, Fraser, awareness plays a big role. I think taking
deliberate effort to advertise through mainstream media like radio,
tv, newspapers etc could create awareness of the tools. Though
expensive, I think it could pay off in raising awareness.

Kind regards,

Bennett
