Local resident Dean Myane had planned an all-girl vacation with her daughter-in-law, future daughter-in-law, the mother of her future daughter-in-law, and friends—17 in all. It was to be a four-day cruise with one stop in Cozumel until the unforeseen happened. The Carnival ship Triumph, with 4,000 passengers aboard, left Cozumel on Saturday evening, February 9, around five p.m.

The governing body of Blanco met on February 12 with three members and Mayor Chuck Homan present and two council members, Al Turner and Bobby McClung, absent. Real Ale Brewery owner Brad Farbstein updated council on the progress of a plan to treat the brewery’s effluent, thereby extending the life of the city’s sewer treatment facility.

Beginning March 2, 2013, the law enforcement agencies of over 100 entities across Texas will combine forces to search for those who have active warrants, and the person will be arrested and taken straight to jail. The Panthers defeated the Johnson City Eagles on Tuesday, February 12 in a nail-biter in the final district game, 50 – 49. Leading the Panthers, Kyle Sauceda scored 16 points. Carlin Green added 12, with Brett Champion making 9. David Ramirez sank 6, and Colton Childress added 3. Sam Isenberg and Josh McCaslin each scored 2. This win placed the Panthers in a tie with Ingram as co-district champs.

While January sales tax receipts, representing December sales revenues, to local taxing authorities were up 4.6% compared to last year’s figures, sales tax revenues received by local taxing authorities were mixed. Remember the annual membership meeting scheduled for Feb. 23, 2013. That's this Saturday. The meeting is at 2:00 pm at the Blanco Library. 179 postcards have been mailed to members whose addresses we had from other meetings or that we were otherwise able to obtain, reminding people of the meeting and the $25 donation per family to help fund cemetery maintenance.

Big homes are out and small homes are in. Yes, more people are opting to build smaller homes these days. There are people building large too, but the majority of people want to downsize or build a guest house. When I say smaller homes, these are roughly 2,400 square feet and below.

The Blanco Boys golf team finished third out of twelve teams at the Ingram Warrior golf tournament held Monday at Schreiner golf course in Kerrville. “We shot 336 as a team, which is very good for a first tournament,” said coach Scott Balmos. “We are looking for our third championship in three years.”

One of the most memorable of my Boy Scout adventures was when I, as an adult leader, along with others, took fifteen Scouts to explore an underground river deep in the heart of Mexico. We, in turn, were led by an experienced guide who was well acquainted with the terrain.

Cornelia Pearl “Tucker” Lindeman, 97, passed away February 19, 2013 in Blanco. She was born in Blanco County on September 4, 1915 to Solomon James Wagner and Ethel Brooks Wagner. Mrs. Lindeman was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wesley Wayne Lindeman; an infant son; brother, A.J. “Farmer” Wagner; three sisters, Lela “Jake” Kruckemeyer, Grace Flugrath, and Bertha Page.

Blanco Daddy/Daughter Dance was held at the Second Mile Rec Center on February 16. It was a huge success, as measured by the great turnout of dads, grandpas, and father figures of the beautiful, special girls of our community, ages ranging from 4 to 12.

On the television we witness the lives portrayed by a screenwriter, or the drama-inflicted cast of a reality TV show; it has become a comfort to ease out of our own lives and slip into one portrayed before us. However, on a 41-foot sailboat there’s nowhere to hide from six younger siblings, and a TV is a luxury we don’t have.

Every year Christians in Blanco have lunches during Lent. The free will offering supports the Blanco Ministerial Alliance. Those offerings are given to people passing through Blanco who need help with gas, food or lodging. Blanco Good Samaritan Center serves the local community with financial help. These lunches are a great time for fellowship, worship, and fun.

Leslie McClinton ripped the nets for 18 points. Lexee Jenkins added 11 points. Jamie McClinton made 6, with Charlsey Smith scoring 5.

Thanks to women in Blanco County, low-income women along the Mexican border are about to change their lives. Willie Berman is a United Methodist missionary on the Mexican side of the border in the Valley, and one of his projects is teaching women to sew...not only to make clothes for their families, but to make products to sell, raising their family incomes.

Rom 8:17-18 says, “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” While we often quote the first part of verse 17, we rarely hear about the second half, “if so be that we suffer with Him.” We don’t normally get many “Hallelujahs” or “Amens” on that.

Blanco has a beautiful cemetery! The flags snap proudly in the breeze. The grave sites are well-kept. It is one of the few trash-free public areas in town. We can all be proud of our historic site. But, it doesn’t get this way by itself. The hard-working board members spend many hours making sure the cemetery is a place to be proud of.
