The 25th Annual Classic Car Show, held Saturday May 18 in Blanco State Park, attracted over 120 entrants, an increase from last year. Entrants from all over the Hill Country, and as far aways as Raymondville, Texas, parked their classic cars along the Blanco River. Boy Scout Troop 497 presented the colors for the awards ceremony.
Another year done and the annual Bands 4 Band Music Festival brought incredible musical talent to Yett Memorial Park in Blanco. Grupo Fantasma, Lannaya West African Drum & Dance Ensemble, The Jitterbug Vipers, Patrice Pike, Hunter Hendrickson, Allen Ray & Southern Comfort, and local favorites Bobby Mack and Zydeco Blanco provided the festival attendees with a wide variety of musical styles and experiences. The Blanco Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the 9th Annual Blanco Lavender Festival will be held June 7 – 9th in the heart of Blanco, on the Old Blanco County Courthouse Square. In the past eight years, the Blanco Lavender Festival has grown into one of the premiere events in the Texas Hill Country and has succeeded in bringing recognition to the beautiful community of Blanco as a destination location.
At the June 11 regular meeting of the governing body of Blanco, the first order of business was the swearing-in of re-elected Mayor Chuck Homan by city secretary Bobbie Mowery and the subsequent swearing-in of re-elected council members Maria Guerrero and Danny Ray by the mayor. Council member Bobby Mack was unanimously re-elected as Mayor pro Tempore by the council.

The body of Samatha Segura, 26, was found Monday morning, May 13, by a couple walking along one of the nature trails in Blanco State Park, Blanco Police Chief Mike Ritchey told Blanco County News. She died of an apparent suicide. "There did not appear to be any foul play," said Chief Ritchey.
The Bulls nearly won the day at the Tiny West Memorial Bull Riding Competition on May 18 held at Yett Park. The bull riders made a comeback in the 3rd and 4th long round. In the short round, one bull rider was able to hold on past the 8 second mark, 16 year old Andrew Alvidez, giving him the 1st place finish.

Annie Albrecht has attended Blanco Independent School District for 13 years. She credits her successful High School career to her passion for learning, competitive nature, and her supportive parents, Bill Albrecht and Lisa Duncan. In addition to being the Class of 2013 Valedictorian, Annie’s other accomplishments include being named a Terry Foundation Scholar, Cross Examination Debate State Champion, National Honor Society Member and a Student Council member.
The Blanco County Commissioners Court held a Special Meeting on Tuesday May 28th. All four County Commissioners attended the meeting. The minutes of the May 14th Regular Meeting were heard and approved by the Court. The Central Texas chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) held its monthly meeting at Blanco’s renovated historical building on Wednesday. There’s an important change taking place at the 2013 GVTC Annual Meeting this June. Rather than mailing capital credit checks to members who don’t attend the meeting, GVTC will apply their amount to their most recent billing statement. This change in procedure is more efficient for members unable to make the meeting, and for GVTC as well.

Pedernales Electric Cooperative welcomed 843 attendees at its annual meeting Saturday, June 22, in Kyle. The annual meeting is the Co-op’s largest and most important event, bringing together members from across PEC’s 8,100-square-mile service area to participate in the democratic cooperative election process and learn more about Cooperative business. This year members also had a chance to help their neighbors by donating blood and contributing to a food drive supporting an area food bank.

St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church held a groundbreaking ceremony for the building of their new church, Thursday May 2. Blanco’s UIL Academic Team finised eigth at the state competition held May 20 and 21 in Austin. “I think that placing so well as a team at the state meet shows the relative academic strength of Blanco High School,” said UIL coordinator Russell Kirkscey. When it comes to the 144 year old Twin Sisters Dance Hall, choosing glass, glazing, sills and sash cords, it hardly had it made in the shade. Now the refreshed windows provide a great view, whether you’re looking outside or in. Members of two boards, the Twin Sisters Dance Hall and Blanco Historic Preservation Commission, worked hard on Saturday, June 8, to make much needed repairs on the old wood windows. These historic wood windows were handmade over a century ago and needed to be saved.
Thursday’s storm brought over one and a half inches of rain, and unfortunately some damaging hail. Friday morning Blanco residents found themselves without power. Wild Women Weekend was able to distribute a total of $28,000 earned during the Wild Woman Weekend last April to members of the Blanco Non-Profit Coalition. We recently returned from Sarasota, Fl. spending time with my 2 children and 2 grandchildren. Of course my Daddy, Harvey "Gene" Green, who will be a young 90 this Dec. lives with me, here in Blanco and took the trip as well. He spent 10 days with his grandkids and great-grandkids, something he doesn't get the joy of doing often enough.
The class of 1959 held their 54th class reunion Saturday, May 4, at the Blanco Methodist Church. Old memories and stories were shared after viewing photo frames of each class members' school years. A good time was had by all, and those unable to attend were missed.

In 1838, my great-great grandfather, Tarlton Lewis, along with several thousand other converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gathered in Missouri. They were unwelcome, not so much because of their religion, but because they were not sympathetic to slavery. The locals perceived, and with good reason, that the “Mormon” influx could decide whether or not Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state.
A patch above the left shirt pocket on my Boy Scout uniform says, “National Jamboree, Colorado Springs, Fifty Years of Scouting, 1910-1960.” On my uniform belt buckle, engraved in pewter, are the words, “100 Years of Scouting, 1910-2010.” It recently dawned on me that I have been involved in the Boy Scout movement for more than fifty years—a half century!
On June 12, 1953 Arthur Daniel and Marjorie Preiss were united in marriage in Sequin, TX. They currently reside in Johnson City. They are blessed with two sons, Carl of Dallas and Kenneth of Flower Mound and one daughter Nellda Gallagher of Ft. Worth. James & Esther Dowlearn will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on June 30, 2013. They married June 30, 1943 at the First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, TX prior to James leaving to serve in the Merchant Marines during WW II. James retired from Southwestern Bell and later worked for Bexar County.
Artists Alliance of the Hill Country (AAHC) was established for all who engage in creative activities, or simply wish to support the arts, to inspire and be inspired, who willingly pool their talents to unite, foster, educate, discover, promote, and advance themselves and their community through the arts. Ashton Lee “Tha Pig” Edwards, 30, passed away on May 5th, 2013. Visitation was held Wednesday, May 8, at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Blanco. Funeral services were held on Thursday at Crofts - Crow Funeral Chapel in Blanco. Rev. Rusty Hicks officiated and burial followed in Miller Creek Cemetery. Audra Janice Joiner was born April 21, 1932 and went to be with the Lord June 4, 2013 with her children by her side. Her parents Alvin and Maggie Duhman Brower preceded her in death: as well as her husband John Wayne (Bo) Joiner in 1998; and two sons, an infant Alvin Lee in 1948, and Alan Kent in 2001. She is survived by her children, Barbara J.

The bell tower at the historical building is no longer bare. A new bell, donated by local businessman and Blanco High School alumnus Dennis Moore, is now formally installed in its appropriate location. The bell was installed Tuesday afternoon, and it took about an hour. “We had to do some things locally to make the installation work,” said elementary custodian Bobby Beard.
An Open Ranch Sorting will take place at the Yett Park Arena in Blanco on Sunday, June 30, to benefit area clinician and trainer Jodie Fuchs, who was injured in an arena incident. The sorting will begin at 11 AM and is open to all riders of any skill level - even if you have never ranch sorted before, this is a terrific opportunity to give it a try. There is no charge for spectators.

The Blanco chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America attended the State Leadership Conference held in Dallas, Texas on April 11-13, 20132. The chapter members were among 3,500 delegates attending the three-day conference. Billy Joe (Bill) Gibson, age 82 passed away suddenly at his home in Marble Falls on April 26, 2013. He was born January 15, 1931, at his family’s home on the Coca Cola Ranch, known to everyone today as Horseshoe Bay. The Panther baseball team defeated the Lago Vista Vikings 10-4 on Thursday, April 26. Josh McCaslin went the distance on the mound going 7 innings and scattering 6 hits and striking out 2. McCaslin also led the way with his bat going 2 for 4 with a homerun and 2 rbi.

Hye, Texas a jewel just west of Johnson City on the Blanco – Gillespie County line. German and Anglo settled in 1860 when a number of farming and ranching families moved to Rocky Creek, three miles east of the site of present Hye. In 1880 Hiram G. (Hye) Brown, for whom the community was later named, built a small store and house south of the Pedernales River on the Austin-Fredericksburg road at the location of present Hye.

Both Blanco Major Boys Teams made the Championship game in the Wimberley Tournament held May 12. The Blanco Gold Team won the game to place 1st and the Blanco Blue team was the runner up.

Answer: At the Blanco Performing Arts Children's Art Festival this Saturday from 8:30-noon at the Uptown Blanco complex. Children ages 6-12 are invited to paint, dance, act out, and experience a live musical and visual art performance.
It has been sometime since my last article about the museum. During that period in time we lost our board member, treasurer and good friend, Rebecca Howerton. It took us awhile to recover from this loss. We appreciate all of the donations in her memory and we have planted some of the roses she had wanted to plant at the museum.
I must thank everyone who assisted in helping give some closure to the mystery of the organization that never talked about anything in their minutes of the meeting. Here is the first choice: This organization was part of the Farmers Alliance, which was very active in the late 1860s to around 1900s when it slowly moved into other organizations that even today assist farmers.
I still haven’t gotten a clue about an organization that existed in Blanco County called “Snearly Alliance No. 2904.” I do know that this organization existed due to minutes from its meetings, even though these minutes were very vague, sparse, or just a line in a small book, with dates in the late 1800s.

April’s meeting of Blanco Woman’s Club met at the First Baptist Church of Blanco. We had an afternoon of music and some ladies described the program as “informative and soothing.” The newly formed musical group, LANTANA, came for a visit with us. The group consists of Susan Marshall on harp, Joan White as vocalist, flautist, and plays the mandolin, and Elizabeth Hodge.
The Blanco Woman’s Club Luncheon took place May 8th at the beautiful Red Corral Ranch. Before lunch, we had a spectacular fashion show presented by Liz’s On the Square and volunteer models from the Blanco Woman’s Club. There was a stunning array of dresses, skirts, shoes, and jewelry that was delightfully modeled. After the fashion show, we dined on delicious food that was catered by Sullivan Street Caterers while the peacocks called in the background.
A television program preceding the Winter Olympics one year featured blind skiers being trained for downhill skiing – impossible as it sounds! Paired with sighted skiers, the blind skiers were taught on the flats, how to make right and left turns. When that was mastered, they were taken to the slalom slope, where their sighted partners skied beside them shouting, "Left!"
El Rancho Cima is an official Boy Scout Camp that allowed us to camp overnight in their woods. After our arrival, we worked hard setting the tents and the canopy for our kitchen tools, gear, and tables. After we ate the foil pouches that we each prepared, we put out the fire and went to sleep. Waking up with a bugle in our ears, we got up and re-built the fire we had burned out the day before and made our breakfast: pancakes, eggs and bacon all in one.

Just as there is a difference in building upon rock as opposed to sand, there is a difference in following our Lord and following the words of men.
This weekend, June 20-22, the Blanco Youth Football League will host its First Annual BBQ Cook-Off at Yett Park in Blanco. The BYFL Cook-Off will start with set-up on Thursday, and Cook’s Choice and Margarita Competition on Friday night, as well as the newly added Kid’s Burger Contest at 7pm! A movie for the kids will be shown at 9pm, admission is $2, and concessions will be available.
Callie Culton and Kelsey Schwind signed commitment letters to play softball at Mary Hardin Baylor and Schreiner, respectively, in ceremonies held yesterday in the Blanco High School library. “I want to congratulate both Callie and Kelsey, and wish them the best in their college careers,” said softball coach Michael Seales to a room full of family and well-wishers.
Casa de Yoga hosted a one-day seminar focusing on creating a safe home sequence. Some came and stayed for the whole day, while others just came to a portion. The workshop was successful as Melynnda Button said, “It was everything I had hoped it would be! It was perfect!" Casa de Yoga plans to host more full- and half-day seminars in the future, so if you missed this one please stay tuned for future events.

AUSTIN —An issue of a supremely contentious nature, redistricting, is the reason lawmakers are still at work in a 30-day special session, and a great deal of citizen input is being gathered before the coming House and Senate floor debates. When Gov. Rick Perry called the special session on May 27, it was his intention that the Legislature would move quickly to make “permanent” the redistricting maps drawn by a federal court last year and used in the November 2012 election.
After extensive discussion, the Blanco City Council took a major step forward last week with regard to the Blanco Streetscape Plan. At the recommendation of the Streetscape Committee, chaired by Ms. Retta Martin, the Council voted to hire a project administrator for 3-4 months whose primary responsibilities would be to gather necessary data to successfully pursue funding opportunities to execute, or accomplish, the Streetscape Plan.
The Class of 1960 held their 53rd high school reunion on June 1, at the Blanco Bowling Alley. Each student was presented with a photo memory frame. A tour was made of the new elementary school that used to be classrooms and lunchroom for them when they were in school.
Community English Classes, an outreach of Blanco First Baptist Church, closed its first term on May 20 with a Celebration and Recognition night. The FBC ministry provides support and instruction to adult English language learners and a program for their children while demonstrating and sharing God’s love. Forty-seven adults enrolled in the program.
