I had a blast as the Blanco County Fair Queen this year. I would do it over again if I could, but I can't. It is almost Fair and Rodeo time again, and that means another queen's contest and a new queen and court. If you are a girl entering your freshman, sophomore or junior year of Highschool, I would encourage you to enter this year's contest.

On Friday, August 9 the Blanco County American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary hosted and Open House and Ribbon Cutting to showcase the new renovations of their meeting hall. Blanco ISD Curriculum Director Rick Labuhn presented 2013 state Accountability Ratings to trustees at their August 12 meeting. The district and all three campuses met state standards on all four indices—Student Achievement, Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps, and Post-Secondary Readiness. At the July 9 meeting of the governing body of Blanco, Police Chief Mike Ritchey presented council members with a proposed curfew for Blanco teens. It would require teens aged 16 and under to be off the streets during school hours and at night by 11 p.m. His theory is that since Boerne and Johnson City have a curfew, teens come to Blanco “because they know they will not be bothered.

At a special called meeting of the Blanco Volunteer Fire Department on July 18, a number of measures were voted on to ensure that the department is in compliance with Emergency Services District #2 rules and will be able to qualify for grants. Three new board members were elected in addition to the current board, which consists of Al Turner, Vance Jenkins, Harvie Lindeman, and Lynn Hicks.

The heavy rains that hit Central Texas last week pushed Lake Travis up by about 10 inches, but the lake still sits about 43 feet below its average for this time of the year because of the severe drought. To fill those 43 feet, it would take enough water to cover all 1,022 square miles of Travis County more than 9 inches deep. “The recent rain was great and much needed, but no one should be fooled into thinking the drought is over,” LCRA General Manager Becky Motal said.

Recently, eleven members of the Blanco FFA Chapter were honored at the 85th Annual Texas FFA Convention in Dallas. Highlighting the honors brought home by local students included over $61,000 in scholarships. Senior Sam Isenberg was awarded a San Antonio Livestock Exposition scholarship valued at $20,000 while Callie Culton and Tyler Hardin each received an $18,000 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Scholarship.

New Blanco Middle School principal Keitha St. Clair is a familiar face to many around Blanco, as she has served as the Student Success Coordinator for the BISD for the past four years, working with at-risk students. AUSTIN — A second special session of the Texas Legislature ended July 30 without the House and Senate accomplishing the governor-ordered task of passing legislation to fund future public transportation projects. House Joint Resolution 2 failed on July 29. Had the proposed constitutional amendment passed, Texans would have voted yes or no to a plan to tap the state’s $12 billion Economic Stimulus (rainy day) Fund to the tune of $1 billion every year for use in transportation projects.

The Blanco Lions Club will again sponsor a community effort to help the kids who will be starting school in a few weeks. The Blanco ISD will be providing a bus on Saturday, August 10. The bus will be parked on the square from 9am to 3pm. It will be manned by Lions Club members and the Leos from the high school during that time. The museum hosted a group of homeschooled children and their parents from the Kendalia, Boerne and Spring Branch areas on August 1st. This group numbered 23 people. We were amazed at the questions of the children and how well-mannered they all were. After a tour of the museum, Lawrence Coffee took time to teach anyone who wanted to learn to rope a calf.

The Blanco Library is pleased to announce that The Libri Foundation has donated 80 children’s books to our community. The Libri Foundation’s mission is to help rural libraries like ours to provide the best quality children’s collection to encourage and nurture a love for reading and learning. The Friends of the Blanco Library raised donations at their annual Dinner and a Movie in the spring that the Foundation matched 2-1.

American Legion Boys State is a fast-paced, week-long, resident experience in leadership and civics held at the University of Texas at Austin for boys who have completed their junior high school year. The boys campaigned, held elections and created mock governments. The many speakers included Governor Rick Perry. Recreational activities included sports tournaments, a marching band and a talent show.

Local Boy Scout, Kenny Standridge, comes from three generations of military men. His family served in World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Panamanian Conflict. Understanding the sacrifices our service men and women make on behalf of our country, Kenny sincerely desired to serve our veterans through his last requirement for Eagle Scout. Over the years as a school administrator I attended many seminars and conferences designed to improve leadership skills. But the best, most effective leadership training I ever received was “Woodbadge” training by the Boy Scouts of America at Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico. It was leadership training in an outdoor setting.
