The Blanco County Commissioners Court held a Special meeting on January 22, 2013. All four commissioners were in attendance, and the minutes of the January 8, 2013 Regular meeting were heard and approved by the Court. County Judge Bill Guthrie asked the commissioners to consider reappointment of County Commissioner Paul Granberg to the Capital Area Rural Transportation System (CARTS) board for a two-year term.

Frank Atkinson is an affable, unassuming man of 37, who lives alone in an apartment on Blanco Street. “I’m a local boy,” he says. “Although I was born in San Antonio, I was raised in Blanco and graduated from Blanco High School in ’95. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was twelve.” Frank lost his sight in 2003 due to the diabetes, high blood pressure and glaucoma.

This mysterious piece of equipment came through town on Tuesday afternoon on its way to Horseshoe Bay, turning north onto US Highway 281 from 4th Street in front of Blanco National Bank. The truck had to come down Loop 163 to bypass the older bridge on the highway, which couldn’t handle the weight of the shipment.

On Friday, January 11th, the District Court considered a change of venue for the trial of Trenton Rodriguez. Rodriguez is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter with a vehicle, a 2nd degree felony, and Intoxication Assault with a vehicle, a 3rd degree felony. In October of 2011, Mr. Rodriguez was involved in a car accident after leaving a party that left one man dead and another woman injured.

Agnes Marie Crider, age 93, of Marble Falls passed away January 12, 2013. Agnes was born April 5, 1919, in Brenham to Stephan and Rosalie Michalak. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church. On June 29, 1941 she married J.R. "Pete" Crider in Brenham, followed by a move to Pete's hometown of Marble Falls, where Agnes and Pete lived for 71 happy years.

Announcing the birth of our new little princess. Ash Makinzi Ackerson was born January 16, 2013, at 10:35am. She weighed 7 lbs 2 oz and was 19.7 inches long. Parents are Gary (2008 graduate of Blanco High School) and Tamra Ackerson. Grandparents are Shane and Julie Purvis of Blanco, Linda Ebberson of Greeley, Colorado, and Kevin Ebberson of Laramie, Wyoming.

January’s meeting of the Blanco Woman’s Club took place in the historic Old Blanco County Courthouse. The Dance and Drama Department, comprised of Kathee, Dean, Tish, Gwen, Pat, and Debbie, presented the African Drums and Dance program performed by Libbey Aly and her dance crew. Libbey introduced her dancers and drummers and demonstrated a wonderful routine.

A memorial service for Carl Bragg, 63, of Sudan, was held Monday, January 21, 2013, at 1:30pm at the First United Methodist Church in Sudan, Texas. Rev. Larry Springer officiated. Ten thousand dollars will be awarded to a college-bound student who best demonstrates characteristics of community involvement by volunteering in the communities in which they live. Hilda Matilda Neumann Hollingsworth Smith, 94, passed away January 14, 2013 in Johnson City. She was born in Cypress Mill, TX to Arthur Rheinhold Neumann and Olga Lydia Birck Neumann. Hilda is a descendant of the pioneering German immigrants who came to Texas in the mid 1800s. For over 42 years she was a regular member of the Home Extension Club, South Citizen 42 Club, Friendship 42 Club, and the Skip-Bo Club.

Jack Dudley Felps was born November 28, 1939 to Wiley Alonzo Felps and Louella Barder in their home on Cottonwood Road, west of Blanco. Jack spent most of his childhood working in the fields, fishing and hunting on the banks of the Blanco River with his brothers and sister. He attended Blanco ISD for 12 years and graduated in 1958.

Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup takes place every year beginning March 1 and continuing through May 31. More than 3 million volunteers participate in this, America’s largest improvement program. In Blanco, the Keep Blanco Beautiful Trash-Off is held the first Saturday in April. More than 100 volunteers from the Blanco community roam the roads, paths, waterways, and ditches collecting litter.

Saturday I took my dog for a walk down River Run. It had been a week since I had enjoyed a stroll along the river. As I usually do, I stuffed a large plastic bag in my pocket so collect trash along the way. I was appalled – there were so many beer bottles and cans (no soda bottles/cans) that I could not carry them all!

We appreciate all the members who attended our Directors' meeting last Tuesday at the Blanco Library. We received some good feedback and now have a volunteer committee to work on a budget and people interested in organizing for more community involvement in the Cemetery. There was extensive discussion of maintenance needs within budget constraints.
