The parishioners of Saint Ferdinand’s in Blanco and Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Johnson City love and are blessed to share their priest with one another and their communities.
Spring is almost here, with redbuds bursting into bloom around the city of Blanco. Unfortunately, some yards are filled with unsightly refuse. Blanco Police Chief Mike Ritchey hopes to remedy that situation with a campaign led by Officer Dale Bennett, who has already issued five citations for violations of Ordinance 332 (unsanitary, unsightly, and unsafe conditions) to property owners.
Even as I type this, the men are patching and painting the Peyton Colony School, installing windows, doors, and doing their best to preserve the school from the elements. The Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department responded to a truck fire in the 5000 block of Cypress Mill Road, northeast of Johnson City, at around 6pm on Tuesday evening, March 12. After dousing the flames, the body of an adult male was found burned beyond recognition. The body was sent to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification. Lt.

In an overwhelming victory, the Panther softball team defeated the Lago Vista Vikings 25-0 on Tuesday, March 12. The Panthers racked up 16 hits in only 3 innings including 9 singles, 4 doubles, and 3 homeruns. Leslie McClinton, Taylor Guinn, and Abbie Culton each ripped homeruns over the fence. Meaghen Seales hit 3 of 3 with 2 singles and a double.

Peyton Elementary School was founded around 1867 by freed slaves in order to educate their children.
Robert “Bob” Smith was my sophomore biology teacher at the American School of Monterrey, Mexico. He was also my scoutmaster. Sitting around the campfire one night during a backpacking trip into the nearby mountains, he told his young charges stories about rattlesnakes and other denizens of the wild. He explained that because snakes are cold-blooded, they have been known to escape the cool of the night by crawling into the warm bedding of unsuspecting campers.
The community is invited to observe a Lenten worship on the first day of Holy Week, which is March 24, 2013. The worship will take place at New Hope Church and will feature the “Stations of the Cross.” This worship is steeped in the early history of the church. Early Christians went on pilgrimages to the Holy Land to remember and honor the journey of Christ during his last hours.

The Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society hosted its annual membership social and meeting on Thursday, March 14. Jenny Bailey presented a program on the Honorable Nathan H. Haller. A former slave, Haller represented Brazoria and Matagorda counties in the Texas House of Representatives in the late 1800s.
On Sunday, March 17, hundreds of onlookers turned out along Lake Marble Falls to see the implosion of the old US Highway 281 bridge. The Texas Department of Transportation decided to demolish the bridge with explosives to cut down on time and money. A new, safer bridge for northbound traffic will now be built in its place.
Blanco High School hosted an open house on Monday, March 18. "The Cinderella Waltz" was performed for attendees by the One Act Play participants.
The Panther baseball team tallied a 5-0 record in the Blanco tournament to claim the championship trophy. On Friday the Panthers beat San Antonio FEAST, 12-1. Sam Isenberg and Chad Marshall each had a triple and two RBI. Layne Lassberg got the win on the mound. Next the Blanco team shut-out Medina 20-0.
Spring break was good to the Panther baseball team as they tallied two more wins. First on Tuesday, March 12, the Panthers defeated the San Antonio Wolverines 8-7. Kyle Gray had 2 hits, scored 2 runs, and knocked in 2 runs. Ian Ray plated 2 runs with a single. Layne Lassberg, Kyle gray, and McKay Adamson saw action on the mound striking out 6 and scattering 11 hits. Then on Friday, March 15, Blanco defeated the Lytle Pirates 8-3.

The Pedernales Electric Cooperative Board of Directors today named Frank Skube PEC’s interim Chief Executive Officer. Skube, currently the Co-op’s Chief Financial Officer, takes over for the departing RB Sloan while the Cooperative’s Board conducts a national search for Sloan’s permanent replacement. “The Board has certainly recognized the wonderful job Frank has done since he’s been here,” said PEC Board President Kathy Scanlon.
We’ve read a description of God on His throne in Revelations 4: 3 “3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.” Last week, I published chapter five of Revelations and it began with God on the throne holding a book sealed with seven seals.
Richard Dean Stone, born in San Antonio, Texas and long-time resident of Blanco, Texas, went to be with the Lord on March 13, 2013. He was preceded in death by his mother, Billie Stone, and father, Harold Stone, also of Blanco. He had only one brother, Gary Stone and wife Jan and children Brittany, Brandon, and Tabitha, all of Temple, Texas. Rick, as he was known by his friends, spent the last several years at the nursing home in Johnson City and made many friends there.
