In the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school shootings, plans are underway to make the entrances of all three campuses of the Blanco Independent School District more secure. Trustees approved a Professional Services Supplemental Authorization for architect Randy Fromberg to design new entrances, including modifications of walls and entrance doors and an automatic locking system to prevent access by dangerous persons beyond a vestibule area.

Blanco County Commissioners conducted a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013. All four county commissioners were present. The minutes of the March 26, 2013 Special Meeting were heard and approved by the Court. County Judge Bill Guthrie told the Commissioners, “It’s that time of year again…to go ahead and advertise in the local papers for bids for a County bank depository.” Commissioner James Sultemeier presented a motion to advertise for bids for a County bank depository pursuan ...

The wind may have nearly blown us out of the courthouse square on Saturday, but it did not dampen the high-spirits and fun in Blanco. Wild Women began converging on Blanco Friday night and continued on through Sunday all for the benefit of the Blanco Non-Profit Coalition. Wild Woman Weekend, WWW, opened with a reception in the courthouse with delicious appetizers provided by Sullivan Street Caterers and wine provided by 4.0 Cellars.

Child abuse is a concern in every community and crosses all racial, economic, and cultural lines. It is committed by both men and women, and sometimes even by young people themselves. Sadly, most often the abuser is a parent, family member, or someone with regular access to the child. Common stressors increase the risk of abuse and neglect.

On Sunday afternoon, April 7, the Blanco Cowboy Church hosted the first of three Youth Buckle Series Playdays. Entry Fees were paid by attendance at the morning worship service and the young cowboys and cowgirls were then fed by a delicious covered dish lunch before they mounted their horses and gathered at the arena fence for opening prayer. It's not too late to get tickets for the final Blanco Performing Arts concert of the 2012-13 season. Sunday afternoon, April 14 at 3pm, the Belgian piano, violin duo of Jolente de Maeyer and Nikolaas Kende will present a concert of all French and Belgian music. Each of these talented musicians has excelled in international music competitions and together they will bring beautifully nuanced poetry to the music.

In the article, “Rodriguez Sentenced for 2011 Fatal Accident,” published in the April 3, 2013, issue, the sentencing included paying the family $2,500 in restitution. The family notes that they do not receive any of the money; it is kept in the court system to pay fees.

The Blanco County Extension Education Association annual Spring Luncheon will be held Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the Johnson City First United Methodist Church, 105 North LBJ Drive, Johnson City, Texas. Serving will begin at 11:00 am and continue until 1:00 pm. Cost will be $9.00 per person. This year, we are trying something a little more upbeat concerning the main course.

The Blanco FFA Livestock and Entomology teams recently competed in the South Texas Invitational Career Development Events at Pleasanton. More than 100 schools from across South and Central Texas competed in various events at this year’s competition. In the entomology event, Blanco would take home 1st place with Erica Flores winning high point individual honors overall.

The Blanco FFA Chapter continued a busy competition schedule as they recently competed in the annual Texas State University Invitational Career Development Events this past month. More than 250 schools and over 3,000 contestants participated in this year’s event. AUSTIN — On April 5, the Texas House of Representatives approved Committee Substitute Senate Bill 1, a proposed state budget of $194 billion for fiscal years 2014 and 2015. The Senate earlier approved a $195.5 billion budget, so the next step is for differences in the two budgets to be worked out in a House-Senate conference committee.

While attending a recent meeting in Bulverde, Texas, I found myself sitting next to Dean and Betty Dowd. They informed me that they were Family History consultants and would be staying after the meeting ended in order to help people interested in tracing their ancestry. I informed them of my interest in tracing my family tree but that I had no information with me.

Jewel Lee Uecker Deloach, 95, passed away April 6, 2013 in Fredericksburg. She was born in Blanco Co. May 11, 1917 to Robert A. Cravatt and Sammy T. Tanner Cravatt. Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Joseph Cullen Uecker and Dugan D. Deloach; grandson, Mark Uecker, all nine of her brothers and sisters, and one daughter-in-law, Greta Uecker.

The coming summer months should be much more pleasant than those of last year. The combination air conditioning and heating unit has not been working correctly at the Blanco County Jail. Anyone who has experienced the summer heat of south central Texas can certainly appreciate the importance of air conditioning. These Master Gardener interns have now completed 50 hours of classroom instruction and have passed their examinations. They are ready to begin the 50 hours of volunteer work necessary to be certified as Master Gardeners. Each year, about 5,000 Texas Master Gardeners provide more than 300,000 hours of volunteer service through the Texas AgriLife Extension Service.

Saturday, April 6, the Long Star Model A Ford Club of Georgetown visited Blanco. The Stephen Smith Ranch located on Hwy 1623 was their destination. The club arrived around 12:30 and numbered 46 members. An old fashioned homecooked BBQ was ready upon their arrival. The menu consisted of BBQ chicken and pork loin, potato salad, beans, bread and relishes.

Blanco baseball faced a tough Lago Vista Viking team on Friday, April 5. The Panthers kept their cool and held on for a 2-1 victory. Kyle Gray had a sacrifice fly to score a run. Skylar Itz went 2 for 2 with a sacrifice fly bringing in TJ Hardin for the winning run. Sam Isenberg, Layne Lassberg, TJ Hardin and Skylar Itz all had outstanding defensive plays. The Panther softball team beat the Lago Vista Lady Vikings 16-1 in a 3 inning, run-rule game on Friday, April 5. Three Panthers batted “1000”, with Leslie McClinton hitting 4 of 4, and Meaghen Seales and Abbie Culton each hitting 2 of 2. Leslie knocked in 3 rbi and scored 4 runs.
