Monica Flores won first place at the regional power lifting meet at Gatesville on March 2. Abby Beard and Katherine Biggs each placed ninth. The girls team tied for fifth. Monica and Erica compete at the state meet at Corpus Christi on Saturday, March 16.

The 3rd Annual Bands 4 Band Festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2013. The Blanco County Commissioners Court held a Regular Meeting on March 12, 2013. The Regular Meeting began at 9:00 am, and all four Commissioners were present. The Court heard and approved the minutes from the February 26, 2013 Special Meeting and Special Workshop Meeting. Commissioner Chris Liesmann asked the Court to consider authorization for County Judge Bill Guthrie to sign an interlocal agreement with the City of Austin for communication interoperability.

A hole in a stone wall of an Old Blanco County Courthouse office under restoration posed a big headache for Rudy Nino, a Blanco contractor and member of the Blanco Historic Preservation Commission. When constructed in 1885, the Old Courthouse (new then) had vaults with steel doors and combination locks in four downstairs offices.

The Buggy Barn Museum and the Blanco Pioneer Museum announced a cooperative agreement to bring back the highly successful WWII exhibit the Blanco Pioneer Museum hosted during 2011-2012. It was but a small descent from the original settlers of the beautiful Heber Valley in Utah to Aunt Ruby’s front door. As a child I loved our Sunday afternoon forays from Salt Lake City to the frequent family gatherings in her living room. The men would talk deer hunting and dairy farming while the women would catch up on quilting, weddings and recipes.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce and the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society will be hosting Community Appreciation Day on the Courthouse grounds on March 30, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. There will be a Community Easter Egg Hunt and Keep Blanco Beautiful will be hosting lunch (for a fee) on the grounds for their fundraiser to help fund beautification programs for our community.

After the storm this weekend and the high winds late in February, there is much clean-up to be done. The sight of trash accumulating in the drainage ditches spoils the beauty of a Hill Country Spring. Please pick up debris along your property lines. The city and the county do not have the manpower, so take the initiative to Keep Blanco Beautiful by gathering bottles, fast food containers, and cans that are lying along the roadside in front of your residence.

Dear Editor, In reference to the front page article on the Commissioners Court meeting held January 22, 2013, specifically, in reference to the possibility of a hiring freeze for all Blanco County departments, I would like to address the Blanco County Sheriff’s Department. This department must be allowed to hire dispatchers, deputies, jailers, etc., as needed.

Serving as a board member of a community or governmental board is rewarding and demanding. Some boards require training, and all require time and interest from volunteer board members. The recent loss of Jack Felps and Rebecca Howerton left two voids in community boards and efforts to fill needs in community boards is an ongoing challenge.

Several members of the Blanco FFA and Blanco Jr. FFA traveled to San Antonio this past month to exhibit livestock in the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. These local students competed in the junior division of various species, with many placing high enough to qualify for the premium sale. Leading the way for the local FFA members was Junior FFA member Kolby Marek, who placed 2nd with his light weight Brahman steer.

The Panther softball team fell 5-7 to the Navarro Panthers on Tuesday, March 5, in a nail-biter. Blanco was down four runs at the end of the second inning. In the third, Leslie McClinton nailed an over-the-fence homerun to spark the offense. The team loaded the bases but scored no runs.
