A little more than a week ago, on December 14, the second-deadliest school shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A shooter entered the school, killed 20 children and six staff members, before killing himself. The events in Newtown have affected the entire nation and will cause waves of change in our country, from the federal level down to the smallest schools.

The 2013 Blanco Lavender Festival Steering Committee announces a search for an official art piece to use as the central marketing theme for the highly successful Blanco Lavender Festival. The 2013 celebration of the Lavender harvest is scheduled for June 7-9, 2013. The Blanco Chamber of Commerce is now accepting entries for the 2013 official festival art piece.

Crystal Thomas and Bo Reiter are proud announce the arrival of their bouncing baby boy. Kamden Ryan Reiter arrived on November 30, 2012, at 7:44 PM. He weighed 7 lbs 10 oz and was 21 inches long. On December 1, 2012, the Hill Country Spurs horse judging teams along with some members of the Johnson City FFA team traveled to Rosenberg, Texas to compete in their first competition of the year. The teams judged six performance and two halter classes. The HCS junior team of Kalli Dalland, Paige Dalland, Willow Grote, and Dooley Smith collected many first place ribbons.

Local members of the Blanco FFA and Blanco Jr. FFA will be taking part in the upcoming 16th Annual Blanco FFA Chapter Show this coming Friday and Saturday, December 14th and 15th. Surprisingly, gas prices around town have fallen below $3 per gallon. Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 5.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.02/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas. The end of 2012 is a time to reflect on accomplishments and make resolutions to “do better” in 2013. The Keep Blanco Beautiful Volunteers have worked hard planting and maintaining the city’s public spaces. In April, an army of citizens took to the streets to clean up the litter. All year long the recycling center has afforded people the opportunity to be responsible and recycle household trash.

AUSTIN --- The Texas Education Code requires that Texas public schools conduct safety audits once every three years. The Master Gardeners of Blanco County will be holding classes for new members beginning January 8, 2013. There is still room for a few more students. Our next classes will not be held until January 2015. Master Gardeners is an active organization that throughout the year gives gardening advice, presentations, and occasionally helps with the hard work it takes to create beautiful landscaping and successful gardens throughout Blanco County.
