A little more than a week ago, on December 14, the second-deadliest school shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A shooter entered the school, killed 20 children and six staff members, before killing himself. The events in Newtown have affected the entire nation and will cause waves of change in our country, from the federal level down to the smallest schools.
The 2013 Blanco Lavender Festival Steering Committee announces a search for an official art piece to use as the central marketing theme for the highly successful Blanco Lavender Festival. The 2013 celebration of the Lavender harvest is scheduled for June 7-9, 2013. The Blanco Chamber of Commerce is now accepting entries for the 2013 official festival art piece.
Pecan Street Brewing in Johnson City is hosting a New Year's Eve shindig. Homer Whisenant & The Plainsmen will be playing on Monday night, December 31, from 8pm to midnight. Blanco Chamber of Commerce President Marcy Westcott presented the Chamber’s first Night Sky-Friendly Business Certificates of Merit to seven Blanco businesses on December 18 in the Chamber office. Assessments in some areas have indicated less than 20% of the land receiving fertilizer is soil tested on a regular basis. At the same time, fertilizer prices have increased tremendously over the last 10 years and in some cases by more than 200 percent.

The Blanco bands held their annual Christmas concert on December 13.
Crystal Thomas and Bo Reiter are proud announce the arrival of their bouncing baby boy. Kamden Ryan Reiter arrived on November 30, 2012, at 7:44 PM. He weighed 7 lbs 10 oz and was 21 inches long. Proud grandparents are Wesley and Charlotte Thomas of Blanco and Billy & Jennifer Reiter of Corpus Christi and Bayette & Steve Bearden of Aransas Pass.
On December 1, 2012, the Hill Country Spurs horse judging teams along with some members of the Johnson City FFA team traveled to Rosenberg, Texas to compete in their first competition of the year. The teams judged six performance and two halter classes. The HCS junior team of Kalli Dalland, Paige Dalland, Willow Grote, and Dooley Smith collected many first place ribbons.
Blanco Middle School, with strong performances across all grade levels and categories, dominated the District 27-AA UIL meet held Thursday, December 13, at Blanco Middle School. “I am very thrilled with our students,” said middle school UIL coordinator Stephanie Taylor. “They did an exceptional job! Winning year after year tells a lot about our students in Blanco—they are truly the best!” “Competing felt good,” said competitor Jackson Hunter, 6th grade.

Local members of the Blanco FFA and Blanco Jr. FFA will be taking part in the upcoming 16th Annual Blanco FFA Chapter Show this coming Friday and Saturday, December 14th and 15th. Lambs and goats will begin showing at 5 pm on Friday with lambs first, followed by goats. The steers will begin Saturday morning at 10 am, followed by the pig show.

The benefits of recycling are that it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills. It conserves natural resources such as timber and water. GVTC has signed a long term agreement with World Wide Soccer L.L.C. to place its name on a sports complex being brought back to life. The GVTC Communications Sportsplex is at the location of the former Northeast Youth Soccer Organization facility on 29064 Bulverde Road. The end of 2012 is a time to reflect on accomplishments and make resolutions to “do better” in 2013. The Keep Blanco Beautiful Volunteers have worked hard planting and maintaining the city’s public spaces. In April, an army of citizens took to the streets to clean up the litter. The National Forensic League, the speech and debate honor society, is proud to announce Russell Kirkscey as its newest diamond coach. Kirkscey, a teacher and debate coach at Blanco High School, received a second diamond award after earning 3,022 points on December 2, 2012. A diamond award recognizes a professional career that combines excellence and longevity.
Johnson City Courthouse Ornaments Sale will return for its final weekend this season on December 29-30. From 6pm to 9pm in the Courthouse lobby in Johnson City the Garden Club’s Christmas ornaments, crafts, post cards, bird houses, bumper stickers and local cook books are on sale. Proceeds support local non-profit organizations.
Members of the Blanco FFA Chapter would like to recognize and thank Blanco Auto Parts / Napa and Benson Body and Paint for their efforts and assistance in helping to repaint one of the chapter’s livestock trailers. After local FFA members had put in a new floor and made repairs to the trailer, the students then prepped the trailer for painting.

The Middle School Student council collected 160 toys to donate to the Toys for Tots charity. Montana and Skylar Wiseman and their mother were the chairs for the drive, and were responsible for the great turnout.
AUSTIN --- The Texas Education Code requires that Texas public schools conduct safety audits once every three years. According to a Dec. 17 news release produced by the state attorney general’s office, the Texas School Safety Center reported that of the 1,025 public school districts that are required by law to submit their safety audits, 38 did not do so and another 40 reported but did not meet full compliance. The Master Gardeners of Blanco County will be holding classes for new members beginning January 8, 2013. There is still room for a few more students. Our next classes will not be held until January 2015. Master Gardeners is an active organization that throughout the year gives gardening advice, presentations, and occasionally helps with the hard work it takes to create beautiful landscaping and successful gardens throughout Blanco County.
