Royal Flash is a 1975 British adventure comedy film based on the second Flashman novel (of the same name, 1970) by George MacDonald Fraser. It stars Malcolm McDowell as Flashman. Additionally, Oliver Reed appeared in the role of Otto von Bismarck, Alan Bates as Rudi von Sternberg, and Florinda Bolkan played Lola Montez. Fraser wrote the screenplay and the film was directed by Richard Lester.

The film begins with Flashman making a patriotic speech to the boys of Rugby School framed by a giant Union Jack, in a scene which appears to be a parody of the opening sequence in the 1970 film Patton. There is a brief flashback to the events of the original Flashman, with the head of Rugby School (Michael Hordern) recounting Flashman's exploits in Afghanistan.

The film then follows the plot of the book, which itself largely derives from The Prisoner of Zenda. Flashman is forced by Otto von Bismarck to impersonate a Danish prince, who is about to marry a German princess (Britt Ekland). Bismarck exacts this retribution partly in revenge for his humiliation at the hands of Flashman in London; Flashman stole Bismarck's mistress Lola Montez, then manoeuvred him into boxing against a professional boxer, John Gully (played by Henry Cooper), at a house party. Bismarck does not wish the Princess to marry a Dane, since this may tilt the balance on the Schleswig-Holstein Question and interfere with his plans for a united Germany.[2]

Flashman, the first novel of The Flashman Papers series, had been published in 1968 and attracted the interest of film producers. At one stage Richard Lester was to direct, but the necessary financing could not be secured. However, Lester enjoyed the novel and then hired George MacDonald Fraser to adapt The Three Musketeers for two successful films in the early 1970s. This enabled Lester to obtain finance for a Flashman film.

Royal Flash was the second Flashman novel, and had been published in 1970. The New York Times said "Mr MacDonald Fraser has considerable narrative skill... most ingeniously plotted and often hilariously funny."[3]

Lester said he did not want to film the first novel as "after putting so much work into it originally, I felt that I'd already made the film, even though it had never reached the shooting stage. It was dead."[4] Diabolique argued the second novel was chosen for filming as opposed to the first because it would be less expensive, and the basic storyline had been successfully used before.[5]

Lester did not want the film to look too close to the Musketeers movies so he used a new production designer and cinematographer. Just prior to filming, Picker and United Artists withdrew finance, but Twentieth Century Fox - who had distributed the Musketeers films - stepped in instead.[8]

The film was shot partly on location in Bavaria.[9] Lester said the film "was hell to make, not because of the actors - I liked the cast very much - but let's say I was less happy with the crew. I think Germany was a difficult place to film in."[10]

Lester said the film was "generally ignored and considered to be a substandard version of The Three Musketeers. It was perhaps a poor choice of mine to pursue because it was a period film, a comic romp with some serious overtones and a lot of swordplay and it did come after Musketeers which was a well loved piece of subject matter."[14]

Lester also felt "that equivocal anti hero wasn't easy to take. They wanted a real hero, a hero that was a bounder as well as a hero. And Malcolm McDowell was absolutely 100% bounder - the sleaze was coming through to the film."[15]

The light will flash for me sometimes when driving aggressively when shifting. The light only comes on if there is low level and has nothing to do with oil pressure. Are you checking the level when cold and the bike level, not leaning??

I read somewhere that the first gens under very hard acceleration can get the oil to slosh to the back of the engine causing the sender to momentarily show a low oil level. I never heard of a 2nd gen doing that but it might be possible. Just a WAG on my part.

Yes i have had the flash from an aggressive take off and second shift but this one is just cruising, after it warms up. Just going down the road. Flash, then maybe on 3 or 4 seconds then off. A Rev seems to make it go off.

I just took Vacation thinking I was going for a ride and just like last year its canceled and I cant change it, so I am off to work on it. I have this engine light on and the New Commander II tire does not fit our bike.

Yea but if you go to the Michiland web site for MC tires any type in our bike it comes up blank. Says we do not make a tire for your bike. I checked it out because another member here had em on and they were cupping, so he called michlin and they said take em off ASAP! They do not belong on your bike.

The problem I have is the why. If I knew the reasoning I may say oh, ok, I can deal with that. But I do not know why. I suspect because we have rims designed for a Bias Ply and not Radials. But, it could be as simple as Yamaha did not have time to spend with them to certify the tire for the bike. I hear its a great tire and a local guy who has a bike shop can't keep them in stock.

Bert 2006 Yep I just replied to that thread, It' was all about the weight rating. Being I am puting a Rear on the front backwards rotation, I am good to proceed! Yay! I am soooo happy! In fact I am like 3 specs over the weight rating on the front. This should match up to my Darkside tire nicely! Whoot!

As I recall he said this light trips on Tip over switch triggered, Fuel Sending Unit fault, Throttle position sensor fault (And that only changes timing a little so bike will still run.) and Emergency stop switch. And he did not know what they mean by that, was thinking they mean switch on Handlebar we call the Kill Switch.

I can't really even guess where to look, The bike only has like 15K miles on it. So maybe I hit a wire or pinched it instaling something or bad connection at a plug. If I can find all these sensors I will clean the plugs with Electrical contact cleaner and see what happens.

I suspect then, on this long high speed trip it started pumping oil into the sytem, I did notice a few drips on the garage floor. I drained some oil, checked the level opps drained too much added too much, and then began the engine oil light flashing. I did chase it down to the throttle Possition sensor but the dealer would not sell me one until I checked and cleaned mine.

I have had an eye problem and I can hardly see to work on the bike when I saw where it was I was like screw that. (Its not where CLymer picture shows it) Si I just got all the oil out of the intake system and Seafoam deep creeped the carbs and shot Electrical contact cleaner at the TPS with hope.
