Boston School Committee meeting in the Winter Chambers meeting room at BPS Headquarters, 26 Court Street, downtown Boston
Check the BPS website for any last-minute location change.
At the School Committee meeting last week, the Superintendent began to show some doubt about the proposal to move Boston Latin Academy to the Hyde Park Education Complex. She admitted that the cafeteria at Hyde Park High is too small for Latin Academy's more than 1700 students and that she was having trouble seeing how the Hyde Park building could accomodate Latin Academy's academic program. She promised us that she would make a decision quickly. After the meeting she promised parent representatives that she would meet with us very soon. More than a week has passed and we have heard nothing more from her. We need to send (another) strong message by turning up at Court Street in large numbers. Please call the School Committee secretary at
617-635-9014 to put your name on the list to make a public comment at the meeting.
What's the issue?
Dr. Carol Johnson, Superintendent of the Boston PublicSchools, has presented a proposal to the Boston School Committee to move Boston Latin Academy, a school of over 1700 students, to the Hyde Park Education Complex, a building which was designed to house about 1200 students. The proposal would also give Boston Latin Academy's building at 205 Townsend Street to The Boston Arts Academy, a pilot school of about 400 students. Floor plans of The Hyde Park Education Complex show that it is much too small to accommodate Boston Latin Academy's current student population and academic program plus the Hyde Park Education Complex is located at the far southwestern corner of the city making transportation difficult or impossible for many BLA students.
