Every time I enter g for a search in the first pane, I get calculator in the second pane in spite of turning it off. Can I just trash Quicksilver and all its bits and pieces and start over again?

Have you deleted the calculator plugin? Go to the plugin prefs, select the calculator plugin, then in the bottom left hand corner click the cog button and select ‘delete’

More than that by now. I've deleted absolutely everything on my laptop that had Quicksilver or blacktree in its name anywhere and installed a fresh copy. What I'm missing however, because I use it the most, is to pop up a bezel, type "G" tab over two panes and enter a search term for Google. That functionality, I can't find. What bugs me is that it works perfectly on my iMac, but not my MBP.

You need the Safari or Chrome plugin enabled and then need to enable the Web Searches catalog.

Go to Quicksilver’s preferences and make sure you have the Web Search
plug-in installed. The original issue sounds like maybe you needed to
re-order your actions a bit (in Preferences → Actions), but I suppose
it’s too late for that.

I have the web searches plug in installed and checked and under Catalog I've added Web Searches, restarted QS. Still doesn't work as it used to.

Go to Preferences → Actions, find “Search For…”, and drag it up
near the top of the list. Make sure it’s higher than “Open URL”,
Calculate, Large Type, and others that might apply. (You can just drag
it to the top in this case, since that action doesn’t apply to any
other type of item.)

Did that; no change. Clearly, there's been a change in the way Quicksilver works that has eliminated the feature I probably used the most. I'll write an AppleScript to do it instead and set up a trigger for it in Keyboard Maestro.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I can't reproduce your problem here, NovaScotian. I type "g" in the first pane and the first match is the Google web search (qss-http://www.google.com/search?q=***&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8) with the Search For... action in the second pane. I didn't need to do anything special to make this work. It sounds to me like something specific to your machine.

I don’t think anyone's asked you what you do get when you type “g” in - is it def the google search option? when I recently did a clean install of Quicksilver the google search option seemed to disappear but it was just miles down the results (at no. 80 in fact!) Even when I type “google” in it’s 9 results down. Quicksilver will learn that the google search option is what you want when you type “g” in time, it’s clever like that, but you can force it to remember straight off by tapping on the little white dot next to the term then tapping on “set as default for “google”.

so in short, type “g” then just keep tabbing downwards in the results till you find “google search” then tap on the little white dot next to the “google search” option and choose “set as default for g…” (see image attached).

(obvsly in the example in the image i typed in “google” rather than just “g” but same applies.)

(also obvsly i have “open url” above “search for…” in my actions hierarchy.)

After I upgraded to Yosemite on my iMac and on my MBP, typing "g" into the first pane of the bezel simply reveals the "Games" folder on that machine. When I go to Quicksilver Preferences, and under All Actions search for the word "search", I get those in the screen shot below. Under the "Catalog Tab" I have "Web Searches (Simple) checked. Under "Plugins" I have the "Web Search Plugin" Checked. Nowhere do I see (qss-http://www.google.com/search?q=***&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8) although I do remember long ago having to enter that expression somewhere, I don't recall where.

I have it as part of Web Searches (Simple). Is it possible that you disabled it in the Contents tab of the Info drawer for the Web Searches (Simple) catalogue entry?
