I'm a long time user of QS.
In the past to have a search engine usable in QS I would search for
"***" and then bookmark that page. QS would somehow index my bookmarks
and recognize that bookmark as a QS search. Ever since upgrading to
snow leopard I've lost that functionality.

Well, today I decided I wanted it back. I deleted QS and all prefs and
previous application support folders/files. Installed a fresh copy
(B56a7 3825).
Installed the websearch plugin, went to catalog > modules > and
activated web searches and then restarted.

Now when I invoke QS and type "goo", I get Google search and the
action is "open URL" where it used to be "search for..." and a text
field I could tab into.

Any thoughts on how to get "search for..." to be the default action
for the web searches? And is it still possible to bookmark a search
engine result of *** to make new web searches (I realize that the
search string needs to be in the url but most modern search engines do
this).

Thanks in advance.

In the Actions section of QS's main preferences pane, drag the Search
For… action up the list until it is ranked higher than the Open URL
action.

And yes, it should still be possible to bookmark *** searches to
quickly create search engine URLs.

You can also use this action instead of the websearch plugin. http://tr.im/EDqO
It takes text entered in QS text entry mode and sends it to yubnub as
a search.

If you don't know yubnub, read about it here: http://tr.im/D4Ak.

But its basically a command line for the web. Uses prefixes to define
searches.

So: "g Quicksilver" googles Quicksilver
"gim poodles" does a google image search for poodles
"wp Persian Empire" Wikipedia searches for the Persian empire
There's also some cool extras like
gimyim splits your browser view into two vertical windows, the left
side is a google image search and right side a yahoo image search

and on and on and on. There's hundreds, if not thousands. And its easy
to make your own at yubnub.org

One QS action, the whole web.

This is AMAZING (first time i've been introduced to YubNub. The only
thing is, it crashes QS every time I use it. Any ideas?

QuickSilver newbie here - thanks for this script. I'd love to use this but I'm not sure where to put it to make it active. Can you advise. Many thanks.

Hi Tim,
You need to put the script into ~/Library/Application Support/
Quicksilver/Actions/

note that ~ stands for your home folder (i.e. /Users/<your username>)

Let me know if this works for you without crashing QS. I can only use
it once and then I have to start up QS again.

P.S. Don't forget to restart quicksilver after doing this. You may
need to ensure that the catalog is scanning that folder as well, not
sure if it does by default or not.

No problem Tim. Would you mind telling me what version of OSX you are
using? I'm starting to think there may be a problem with 10.6.2

For anyone who might have some insight, here is the beginning of my
crash log. I seem to remember EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) being a problem

Thanks Tim.

Further investigation reveals that the qSearch script crashes
quicksilver when using any command interface other than Primer. Anyone
have ideas what could be causing that?

Well, I'm not much for deciphering Console errors. But I use Bezel,
never primer, and it works for me. I'm on 10.6.2 on a 2008 MBP.
Since you have Snow Leopard, I know you have an intel chip, but is it
possible you have the first generation of Intel Macs that are 32-bit
only? It's possible that using a script I compiled (which I think gets
compiled as 64-bit) would crash you.

So two things:
1. I did make a few changes to the script. Maybe they'll help. The
original download link now links to those, or you can just use this:
http://tr.im/D4BS

2. Open the script in Applescript Edior, save it, and quit it.

3. Move it to ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Actions

4. Restart QS.

Does it work?

Also, though I think this script works better than the websearch
plugin, you can use yubnub with that as well. bookmark:

Hey thanks for the response elspub. I am running a MacBook Pro which
is model "1,1". It is an Intel Core Duo processor, which is 32-bit
only. I guess that would explain why I am having trouble and no one
else is!

I tried your suggestions. I downloaded the updated script, opened it
in applescript editor, compiled it again (just for kicks) and then
saved it. I added it to the scripts folder and restarted quicksilver.
Still crashes on the bezel theme. I guess I'll have to give websearch
a try. Thanks a lot for the help thus far.

Maybe saving it isn't enough. Try hitting the compile button first,
then saving it. Or, open it, select all and copy the whole script.
Then start a new script, paste in the script, and save it as a new
script.

YES!!! That worked. I am surprised re-compiling it in the same file
didn't work, but what I did was copy it into a new file like you said
and save it with a different name (yubnub). Thanks so much!

That's weird that you have to do it this way... But I'm glad it worked
for you.

Enjoy it. And I recommend checking out some of yubnub's special
commands:

Hmmm I've got another little question - is it normal for the icon in
the most recent git - (tiennou) - that it looks like 2 icons layed on
top of another??

I remember I didn't have that probem with b54...

Any solution to this one?

Thanks

Are you sure you don't have 2 QSs running? Open up Activity Monitor
and search for 'Quicksilver'. There should only be one entry.

What exactly do you mean by 'icon'?? and you're talking about b57 yes?
