Updated to Sonoma, Flashlight gone and no app opening

The upgrade on my desktop machine worked fine. On my laptop the Flashlight interface vanished, and won't even appear after checking it in the Plugins list. Worse, when the Bezel interface pops up and I type in an app, instead of opening the app it just displays the pathname to the app in large type.

How do I get it to work again?

This route to reporting has been deprecated and is rarely looked at.
