Subject says it all. http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/web_search_list
should have 600 some web searches, now it has none. Not being able to
deselect catalog entries was kind of annoying, but took very little
time to work around. This is a huge pain in the neck, as now every
user will have to make a web search catalog by hand. Is there any way
this can be patched and the hosting changed? Alcor obviously doesn't
care about QS anymore, so this was inevitable in hind sight.

At the risk of being presumptuous, I've posted a list of web searches,
usable by the Web Search Module with a slight tweak to an Info.plist
file, to the tiennou/blacktree-elements wiki:

http://wiki.github.com/tiennou/blacktree-elements/alternate-web-searches

Instructions for tweaking the Info.plist file are also on the wiki
page.

FYI, Alcor is working at fixing the blacktree list.

It's back up now.

I still think the current developers should do everything they can to
distance themselves and QS from Alcor, he abandoned the project ages
ago and it's time for Quicksilver to move on.

I don't want to push any agenda involving distancing QS from Alcor.

But I do think there are two aspects of the Web Search Module that
stand to be improved:

1. I think the web search list on blacktree is bloated. In the version
of the Web Search Module I have (from tiennou/blacktree-elements),
there is the option to have two sources: the normal list and an
"extended list". Perhaps there is a way to edit the web search lists
on blacktree to take better advantage of this. Perhaps it would be
better to switch to some other hosting (e.g., a github wiki) for these
lists.

2. In the "Custom" sources section of the catalog, I can either add a
"Web Search List"---adding urls one at a time---I can add a local html
file filled with search links via the "File and Folder Scanner". It
would be nice to add a "Web Page Scanner" that harvests links,
including searches, from a remote html file. Then it would be easy for
the community of users to share web search lists of all kinds.

As for the wiki page I posted: perhaps the right thing to do instead
is to fork blacktree-elements, create a branched version of the Web
Search Module with the alternate Info.plist, and put the alternate web
search page on the wiki of the github fork? I'm happy to do whatever
the developers are most comfortable with.

I saw that tiennou tried to create a different (and much smaller)
list:

http://wiki.github.com/tiennou/blacktree-elements/alternate-web-searches

I'm Using the Web Search plugin downloaded from the plugins pane.
After I followed the instructions, I noticed that they didn't work
anymore. The *** that QS needs to designate the link as a websearch
were seen as their hexcodes (%2A%2A%2A).

Any one else have this problem? Perhaps I have an old version of the
plugin?

tiennou didn't create that list or those instructions. I did.

I was taking the "wiki" part of wiki seriously, but I think I
overstepped, and I apologize. It isn't something that the qs
developers endorse or should be asked to support. It should be removed
from that page and moved someplace that makes it look "less official".
So let me hereby do that: it is now at

http://wiki.github.com/dsanson/dsanson.github.com/web-searches

I replaced the bit on tiennou's wiki with a link, but I won't be
offended if tiennou wants to delete that. Anyone using the old page
will need to modify their Info.plist to point to the new url.

As for the problem with the asterisks: you are right. Asterisks won't
work, because github's textile parser won't allow them in the url.
Replacing them with hexcodes doesn't work either, because QS doesn't
recognize them as dummies for the search query. The solution is to use
Firefox style urls, replacing the search query with '%s' instead of
'***'. I've made that change to the (new) page.

Ahh... gotcha. Thanks for the update (and fix).

Does anyone have a copy of the old, long, bloated list of searches
that disappeared from http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/web_search_list
?

I would really appreciate to have it, since there were some rare
searches there that I frequently used.

David,

I really appreciate you taking the initiative to set this up. But
right now, it doesn't work. When I load the most current version of
that page, all I get are 78 links that link right back to the page -
nothing searchable. Do you think it might be something on my end or is
it a problem with the page itself?

Thanks,

ZW

As mentioned on the github wiki page I linked to above, I gave up on
using it because I couldn't figure out how to get github's textile
parser to handle the wildcards in the urls.

I have been using https://dl.dropbox.com/u/85338/websearchlist.html
without any problems. But since that page can only be edited by me, it
is sort of pointless.

Have you tried saving the websearchlist.html file on your harddrive
and adding it to Quicksilver's catalog? In the Catalog tab of QS
Preferences, hit the + button and select "File and Folder Scanner",
select the html file, and under "Source Options" selection Include
Contents: HTML Links. That should work without any hackish
modification of the plist file.

Thanks David, that's a perfect solution.
