I'm trying to use TextExpander to help me move files around with QS's current selection.  The issue comes when I type out the abbreviation the first time as it doesn't work, but when I type it out a second time it works.  Any one have an idea why that is?

Before anyone can figure out how to help, you'll need to give a more detailed description of what you are doing, how you are trying to use QS and TextExpander together, what you expect to happen vs. what actually happens, etc.

Alright.  I currently have a trigger set up to take the current selection and to set the action to move to another directory.  The third pane is blank.  But I have set in TextExpander abbreviations to common folder directories that I can use them in the third pane.  The abbreviations work only when I type them out the second time, so for instance: first pane: 'currently selected file'; second pane: 'move to…' action; third pane: ';abbr'.  The first time I type out the abbreviation it doesn't expand.  But the second time I type it out it does.  I don't understand why.

Does the third pane switch to text-entry mode between the first and second attempts? I haven’t tried it, but I would guess that’s the only way it’s going to work.

The third pane is in text-entry mode when I type it the first and second time – I hit the period before I start typing when I'm at the third pane.

I've encountered this as well. It seems that the "." typed to get into text entry mode is considered a part of the snippet calling string. e.g. If you have a snippet that is called by ".{",
Bringing up QS, typing "." to enter text-entry, then typing "{", will activate the snippet.

This was not always the case; I believe before QS 1.0, the "." was ignored somehow.

I'm not sure how relevant this will be but this smells like a
delimiter problem to me. I have a bunch of snippets that get real
persnickety about the context they're typed in until I 'clear the
context' by pressing backspace a couple of times and then type them in
again. The `.` to get in to text mode might be screwing it up.

Just a thought!

Yep, that solved it.  Thanks hagure and Tim, I'm now free of this nagging issue!!

It's not solving it for me. Which version of TextExpander are you using?

They didn't so much as to solve the specific problem, but indicating that it was delimiter problem just let me know that I have to now hit delete after hitting the period to get into text mode and it typing the abbreviation.  I know it's workaround solution but if you don't want to hit delete then I would suggest using Typinator which doesn't have this delimiter problem.

Does it work in the 1st pane? I can't get it work at all. ^Space to activate Quicksilver, then period for text entry, immediately hit delete, the my abbreviation and nothing….

What are your delimiters set to?

I have it set to semicolon. Thing is, it's looking like its dependent on what the abbreviation expands too. Some of mine work. Others don't….

Out of curiosity, what happens if you set it to something like space
and then type that first?

I can't pin this down. The one that was working consistently is now broke (before I changed a broken one to start with a space). At any rate changed it to a space and still no love.

FWIW (and if it's worth anything at all) I also have this problem with both the text expanding service that comes bundled with OS X (in the "Language & Text" Systems Preferences panel, under "Text") & when I use xType.app (a free text expansion utility that both Lifehacker & One Thing Well recommend).

However xType also adds the the "snippet" to the clipboard when I type the "shortcut" so if, say, I had an abbreviation "qs" tied to expand to "Quicksilver rocks my world" all I do is type "qs", backspace to remove the unexpanded letter "q" then press "⌘V" which pastes "Quicksilver rocks my world" in.

Admittedly an ungainly workaround & also admittedly I have no idea if this works with TextExpander but it may be worth your trying.

It might be worth bringing this up to the people at Smile. Some of
them probably use Quicksilver and might be able to bring something
useful to this discussion. I think most of us are just shooting in the
dark here. :\

Those dealing with this issue who are typing . to enter QS's text mode might consider typing ' to enter text mode instead. Either one will work, and maybe that will avoid your TextExpander delimiter issues.

Reviving this thread (sorry I gave up on it) as I'm to trying to get one of my work flows to work again.

First note that I've change my guard character in TextExpander. I no longer utilize a guard at all and have moved to an "ip address" style of dot notations, making it easier to remember the key.

In Quicksilver, I tried the ' vs . to enter text input mode and neither seems to work. Text expansion into the first pane simply does not work.  What is very interesting to me is that text expansion into the 3rd pane DOES work and it works every time.

Problems like this are almost always related to the "Expand after" setting of the group in which the snippet resides.

That is, if the snippet group  "Expand after" is the default "whitespace", then TextExpander doesn't 'know' that the . or ' you type to enter text input mode didn't actually get 'typed', it thinks you are typing ".abrv", not "." then "abrv".

Change the "Expand after" to "any character" (if this is suitable for your abbreviations), or type a space first into the text input area.

Thanks for using TextExpander from Smile!

Brian
