I've unticked my Time Machine external drive in:

Preferences > Catalog > Devices > Disks > Show Info > Contents

yet all the previously cataloged Time Machine items remain. Will i
have to clear my catalog? If so, how?

Rescan the catalog after unchecking the drive.
Do this by clicking the curved arrow button at the bottom of the
catalog or by activating QS with control-space (or cmd-space or
whatever you use) and then typing cmd-R.

Turns out, even though the drive was told not to be cataloged, i had
'Find All Applications' checked under Catalog > Applications. Every
time i invoke QS and type, QS would hang for about 4 seconds and i
could hear my time machine drive being accessed. Then, sure enough,
there was at least 3 copies of the app (2 Time Machine copies).

Even though i'm using the top shelf 24" iMac and a Firewire 800 disk,
QS was chugging hard every time i invoked.

So the trick is to uncheck 'Find All Applications'.

With this unchecked, will it still find apps that aren't directly
under /Applications ? ie, Terminal?

The /Applications/ folder is scanned to a depth of 3, so it should
find Terminal just fine. You can see this by Opening the catalog,
selecting Applications on the left and then in the right pane select
the Applications that appears there. Hit the i button on the bottom
to open the drawer, look in the Source Options tab. This is read
only so things are greyed out but you can see the settings. To create
an editable clone of this, instructions are in the catalog section of
the manual.

I have Finder in my catalog because I have Running Applications and
Processes checked. BTW it's in /System/Library/CoreServices/
Finder.app, you could add the folder as another catalog source if you
want. I've never wanted bring it up in QS before. I would typical
select a folder directly and use the Open action. What do you
typically do by selecting Finder in the first pane?

Thanks Howard.

I use QS as an app switcher just as much as an app launcher, which is
where i mainly access Finder. But you're right, i probably should go
directly to the folder i'm after and save myself some time...
