Issue with the latest itunes

I upgraded to the latest itunes for mac (bad idea) and now the lame
encoder hangs after each track as it tries to "add artwork" and
"determine gapless playback info". This did not happen with I used
the encoder with the previous version of itunes. Is there a way to
disable this without rolling back my itunes? The last time I tried to
roll it back it would not recognize my library xml and disaster
ensued.
