Code cleanup underway

Hi,

I've begun doing some long-needed cleanup of the code. So far I've refrained from touching the graphics code to avoid shooting Robert in the foot, but I have made significant cosmetic changes to other areas of the code.

Robert, let me know when would be a good time to clean up the graphics code so I don't mess with anything you are doing.

Ok.  I'm back in SD now, so I'll start spending some time refactoring and cleaning up my graphics code. Unless you wanna have a pass at it first?
