Software Engineer - ORA

Bodleian Digital Library Systems & Services (BDLSS), Osney One Building, Osney Mead, Oxford, OX2 0EW

Grade 7: £33,309 - £40,927 per annum

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Digital Collections team within the Bodleian Libraries.

You will be part of a team which is responsible for development and enhancement to the Oxford University Research Archive (ORA) – the institutional repository for research outputs produced by Oxford scholars. ORA provides public access to the University’s research output. This includes research theses, journal articles, datasets, and many other forms of research, making these available in a free, stable, open access platform. In doing so, ORA supports the University’s Open Access objective, and provides a critical service to members of the University, making their research widely available, and enabling them to comply with the Open Access (OA) policies of major research funders and research assessments such as the REF (Research Excellence Framework). You will play a pivotal role in the next phase of ORA’s development, as well as providing day to day support to the Open Access Collections team responsible for content curation.

You will be able to demonstrate a wealth of application development experience utilising a variety of technologies, and evidence of having worked both collaboratively and individually in the delivery of robust and resilient services. You will work under the mentorship and direction of the team lead but be able to take ownership of key areas of functionality and performance to meet the needs of staff and users.

ORA is built on open source Ruby and Rails frameworks such as Samvera and Blacklight. In the role you will liaise with various stakeholders in requirement gathering and documentation of technical specification for future agreed development, as well as being active in contributing to the wider open-source software community from which the ORA system utilises in its application make up, such as Ruby on Rails, Blacklight, and Samvera repository solutions.

This post is permanent and provides an excellent opportunity for any developer looking to move onto their next challenge. Working full-time, you will join a fast-moving team at a pivotal stage of service development, contributing to the creation and enhancement of these services that are indispensable to the academic output of the University of Oxford and in the support of the areas of Open Access and Open Scholarship.

You will have experience working with structured records, and APIs. Good attention to detail in code development and review. Good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently are essential, as well as the ability to explain and lead a task to successful conclusion.

Only applications received online before midday on Wednesday 24 November 2021 can be considered. You will be required to upload a CV and a supporting statement as part of your online application. Your supporting statement should list each of the essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the further particulars, and explain how you meet each one. CVs on their own will not form part of the selection process and will not therefore be accepted as a substitute for a supporting statement.

Interviews are expected to take place week commencing Monday 6 December 2021, and may take place via an online platform (likely Microsoft Teams) where a physical meeting is not possible.
