Greetings,
Please be on the lookout for The Communiversity’s Reportback from our recent advance team “Suitcase Delegation” carrying out the First Phase of our “Stand With Cuba Humanitarian Campaign”. The trip was a powerful success to which many of you have told me you’re looking forward to hearing about and participating as future “Ambassadors”.

The Zoom report will be  held an evening between August 18th  and August 23rd.  Confirmed participants include Humanitarian Campaign Co-Chairs accomplished historian  Robin D. G. Kelley, veteran activist, attorney and Cuba solidarity activist Rosemari Mealy, and  NC solidarity activist Tatia Ash. Also on deck Akinyele Umoja, founding member of MXGM/NAPO and a professor at Georgia State University.  Of course, we will include those who made this initial trip, Isaiah Johnson, professor, Roxbury Community College, Tony Menelik Van Der Meer, Sr. Lecturer, University of Mass., Boston Africana Studies, and chair of The Communiversity’s Board, and Shafeah M’Balia, Director, The Communiversity.

Below is an excellent newsletter on current events relating to the island.  Be sure to check out the video included. It promotes Belly of the Beast, but/and moreo, it shows a little slice of what we saw when we traveled and it tackles head on, Why the issue of the US blockade & embargo is important - especially to Black people.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Six years ago, Belly of the Beast set out to tell stories about Cuba that weren’t being told anywhere else.

Since then, we’ve built an independent multimedia newsroom that covers breaking stories while producing groundbreaking videos, investigative reports and documentaries.

At a time when the Trump administration is waging an unprecedented economic war against Cuba and carrying out a McCarthyite crackdown on media outlets like Belly of the Beast that dare to report critically on its policies, your support allows us to keep doing exactly that.

Today, we’re sharing a short video reflecting on our journey through the eyes of Belly of the Beast journalist Liz Oliva Fernández.

If you believe independent journalism about Cuba matters, please consider supporting our work today.

SUPPORT BELLY OF THE BEAST

Liz had almost given up on journalism. She couldn’t recognize the Cuba she knew in either Cuban state media or U.S. government-funded outlets. In Belly of the Beast, Liz found a newsroom committed to telling stories with nuance, context and humanity.

Watch Liz’s video now.

Over the past six years, our commitment to telling Cuba’s untold stories has taken us across the island and beyond.

We’ve documented the impact of blackouts on hospitals, investigated the consequences of U.S. sanctions and the political interests behind them, reported from communities rebuilding after hurricanes, embedded with Cuba’s medical missions from Italy to Guinea Bissau, exposed the lies that justify economic warfare, and told countless stories that rarely make it into mainstream media.

None of this would be possible without readers and viewers like you.

Whether you become a Patreon member or make a tax-deductible donation, every contribution helps us continue reporting from the ground in Cuba, pursuing stories few others are willing to tell and making our work freely available to audiences around the world.

With gratitude,

The Belly of the Beast Team
