Cuba Is Not Alone: Unions Launch the Global Campaign for Cuba

By the World Federation of Trade Unions, the International Workers Institute, and the Cuban trade union center

Posted by World Federation of Trade Unions

Jun 7, 2026

6,230,973 Cubans have signed a petition to defend their homeland! And despite the lack of transportation, five million Cubans took to the streets on May Day 2026 to protest against US warmongering threats.

Now it is our turn around the world to form a protective shield around the island of revolution, pride, peace and defiance of US imperialist plans.

At the International Conference in Solidarity with the heroic Cuban people, held in Havana on May 2nd and hosted by  the CTC  (Central de Trabajadores de Cuba, the Cuban trade union federation), an important resolution was adopted to launch a Global Solidarity Campaign to collect MILLIONS of signatures in every country of the world. The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU,) the CTC, and International Workers Institute (IWI) are the initial co-sponsors.

This an enormous task, a task never undertaken before,  and crucial for the future of the Cuban people. Below are  answers to some questions and some thoughts on how this campaign should be organized. Much more information can be found at the links listed below.

First of all, we need to keep daily communication channels open for all your ideas, so that we achieve the best possible results.

The heart of this campaign will be our unions, but this campaign needs to open to every mass organization, every peace-loving person, every friend of Cuba who wants to step up and contribute.

Experienced trade unionists, leaders of regional union structures, should reach out to all trade unions and trade unionists in your countries and other countries, irrespective of their affiliation, inform them about the campaign and ask them to join and be in contact with us. Contact people in the arts, sports, and the academic world to endorse the campaign and promote it in their media.

A. Online Campaign

Through the website www.firmoporcuba.com, the Facebook, Instagram, X and Telegram of the campaign, we want to publish daily video-statements of trade union leaders, as well as of respected progressive people of the arts, sports, academics, and simple workers at their workplaces and in their daily life. We want you to send us videos and photos of the campaign to show the massive, global spirit of the people. Every video and every photograph will strengthen and inspire others. It will be a brick in the protective wall around Cuba.

Therefore, we ask you to share the posts and videos through your media, your social media, through your personal platforms, to your members, to journalists that support you. As you know, the algorithms are working against us, millions of dollars are spent to promote fake news and disinformation. Only if we work as one voice supporting each other we can engage more people, especially the young generation which uses these platforms. Ask the young members of your union to help you and take responsibility to document this campaign, send us their contacts so that we can be daily in contact with them.

In the online form everyone around the world who is not in contact with a union or is in a remote location can add their name to support the campaign.

Most importantly:

B. Organize the Campaign on the Ground.

This is where our true power is, among the workers and the masses, in your assemblies, in our conferences, inside and at the doors of the workplaces, in our strikes, our demonstrations, in the communities and the mass organizations of the youth, the women, the migrants, at the sports fields, the parks, the cultural events. There is where we need to reach everyone with a strategic plan organized from the top leadership of the unions at national level according to your capacity. We need to print posters, stickers, t-shirts, prepare informative leaflets, write articles, hold press conferences, and reply to the disinformation campaign in your national media.

We need to print hundreds of the signature forms and hold them in our hands wherever we go, organize groups of our members to collect signatures in every mass event and wherever the workers and the youth live and breathe. This link enables you to print the signature forms: (https://www.firmoporcuba.com/print ).

All these signatures should be gathered and delivered to the Embassies of Cuba or added in the online form. Also inform our email: con...@firmoporcuba.com.

Alongside this campaign, we ask you to publish declarations that you will send to the US Congress, to the European Union and to the national governments, informing also the Embassies of Cuba.

We ask you to raise material support, financial aid, medicine and medical supplies, and solar panels and to put pressure on your national governments  that have bilateral and economic relations with Cuba, especially those that can provide concrete solutions to the fuel blockade. Send professionals and brigades to Cuba of people who can contribute in coordination with CTC.

The purpose of this campaign is to let everyone know that in defending Cuba, we defend a state where the workers hold the power in their own hands, where they have a government formed by the people for the people, where they organize the economy with central planning for the benefit of all the people, where they have modern free healthcare and education that truly benefits the people and not a handful of multinationals, where people live in solidarity, enjoy the arts and have a beautiful, peaceful country.  Because of all these, they are the target of a genocidal blockade. The US government cannot stand to have an island with such a large Black population to become an example of pride, dignity and people’s development.

Cuba has always stood on the side of the Palestinian people; it has offered them education and a hospitable home away from home. Cuba sent tens of thousands of soldiers, doctors, teachers, and technicians who gave their lives for the liberation of the people of Angola and Mozambique, and unlike every other country that reached Africa, Cubans took back only the bodies of their fallen heroes. In the recent pandemic, Cuba sent hundreds of doctors, teachers, disaster and humanitarian aid, created a Covid vaccine and helped combat Covid for the people’s benefit and not for the profit of the multinationals operating in the health sector. Cuba has produced artists and poets; it has advanced political thought and it has contributed much in the international workers movement. Cuba has stood firm in supporting the World Federation of Trade Unions. We owe Cubans a huge debt that we have a WFTU today.

The measures the US has taken against Cuba the last 67 years, especially the latest ones suffocating the Cuban people by depriving them of every drop of fuel for the last several months, and putting Cuba on the list of “terrorist supporters,” would put any country in a disastrous situation of total collapse and a dystopian internal situation, yet the Cuban people are innovative and resilient.  They seek to find a Plan B and a Plan C for every impossible problem. They turn to solar panels, to electric motorcycles. They walk endless hours, and patiently withstand the many hours in darkness. Doctors are giving every inch of their efforts to save lives, especially newborns. Young people organize to voluntarily collect garbage. Researchers are developing vaccines and cures for problems the private sector around the world does not profit from. Cuban researchers are trying hard to dilute Cuba’s heavy oil whose quality does not easily allow refining especially without being able to import the special materials required. Mothers are offering a great service to their country by holding the families together. Workers in all fields are working in every way possible to support the economy and bring back the electric power, the water and the Internet whenever possible

While imperialist aggressiveness is becoming more catastrophic every day all around the world and especially in West Asia, Africa and Latin America, we have a duty to meet the moment and build a global movement of the working class.

This campaign can be an opportunity for every union in every country to reach new members, young people, who look up to Che and Fidel, who want to find a meaningful cause and a productive escape from the insecurity and moral deterioration of this exploitative and barbaric capitalist system, people who will further empower our unions and become the next generation of trade unionists.

We appeal to all of you to raise this campaign as the highest internationalist priority.

We have a “nuclear weapon” and this is our internationalism. Together we will succeed.
